So I got a PS3 Slim for Christmas but I want to use it in my uncle's room because he has the nicer setup: a 47" 1080p 120Hz Vizio and Technics SA-GX350 amp from the early-mid 90s with two nice bigass 3-foot tall bassy speakers vs our living room's 42" Sharp Aquos 1080p and three year old home theater in a box with built-in DVD upconverter which doesn't even have an Optical audio connection on it which is hooked up to two pathetic little pre-packaged 8-inch speakers and an average subwoofer.

Being that his receiver is from well before Optical digital or Coaxial digital(the one that has a single RCA connector) existed, all he has is the standard red and white RCA analog inputs.

I'm wondering if I can hook the PS3 up through HDMI to his TV and then have the proprietary Composite video harness hooked in as well just to hook its sound connectors into the receiver.

The same thing worked on his FiOS HD box where I just hooked the HDMI into his TV and then used the red/white RCA outputs to go to his receiver and it sounds great so I know it's definitely possible, I'm just wondering if anyone else had tested it the way I described for the PS3.

And on a side note, does anyone know why the hell they call Coaxial digital that name instead of something that actually makes sense like digital RCA, which it actually resembles and pretty much is?  I understand that the cable itself may be made from RG6 but the connectors themselves are RCA so wtf

My setup.  PS3 to TV via HDMI.  And then from TV optical out to receiver optical in.

I'm 99% sure it'll work. In fact I think I did it some time ago
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The receiver doesn't have optical, it's from the 90s.

I used to run the same setup. It's certainly possible and ok.

Plug in the HDMI cable and connect it as usual, plug in the PS3 composite cable and plug in the red and white audio cables into the stereo (just leave the yellow one hanging there I guess). Go to the PS3 settings tab on the XMB > Sound settings > Audio output settings, then choose the bottom option (you'll see a picture of it to confirm).

Red and white cables instead of optical work just as fine. As long as the setup remains to be: PS3 connected to the TV (Most likely via HDMI) and then the TV connected to the receiver.

Oops, didn't read that correctly.  I'll have to check to see if my current gen LCD's have RCA outs.  All brands seem to have abandoned S-Video.  And my old monster CRT had TV-out, and I sure miss it.

I have it set this way as well.

I think PS3 only allows one audio output at the same time so either HDMI or RCA. Best to give it a try.

Yeah, it does work, you have to enable multi-output or whatever in the sound settings like he said

Yeap, ended up just using it on the living room system anyway cuz a shitload of my stuff is already cluttering my uncle's room and I don't really want to hear my sister playing Black Ops through my wall.

lol thanks

And on a side note, I wish someone like Monoprice would make a special cable that uses the proprietary connector of the PS3 but has maybe nicer thicker beefier audio cables and no video output at all since it just sits there and clutters things while probably spewing out useless signal(causing interference) as well, it would be perfect for applications like this where there's already an HDMI going into the TV and you still want a direct connect to the receiver that has no Optical in.  They already have something similar for the 360:

Yeah, I guess that might be it, like this one I got for between my FiOS box and receiver:
