It won't hurt it. Especially for auto handguns which use an inertial firing pin. The pin is shorter than the housing in the slide that contains it. The firing pin will stop the same, cartridge or not.

It might not be good for the firing pin spring but like I said, I've dry fired my pistols thousands of times and they're 100% good to go. No issues.

The firing pin will stop the same, cartridge or not.

Depends on the design, the firing pin can hit its retaining pin - if it has one - or the inside of the slide, or the spring can become spring-bound which will damage it.
The hammer will stop the same, not the firing pin.
