You have to submit to defeat .. which is very tough for us humans to do. Until you submit you can not acknowledge the power it has over you. Until you acknowledge it you can not begin to take your life back.

I dunno if it's a self title, but as far as I'm aware, AA always considers people "recovering". My mom has a good friend up near Albany who's been clean for 8 years, but he still titles himself as a "recovering alcoholic".Uzique wrote:
do past drug addicts consider themselves as being in a state of 'recovery' all their lives? never really thought about that
seeing as drug-abuse is a potential risk and a temptation for everybody, in the right situation
i guess you'll never 'recover'

Whats arrogant about being prejudiced against a crack head? The crack head was not addicted to crack BEFORE he starting doing it. It should have been very easy to say no and walk away from drugs before you take them and get addicted. Some people don't. I have no problem judging these idiots. I also have no problem letting them swirl down the toilet that they conscientiously, purposefully and deliberately flushed.Kmar wrote:
You really can't compare cigarettes to drug and alcohol abuse. Every substance has a purpose. Cigarettes aren't going to give a thirty minute feel good high. The reasons people get addicted varies. We are biochemically unique, as are our life circumstances. That is why I hate it when people instantly judge others. Truthfully they have no idea. It's a sickening arrogance.
got it. Then I shall step off the soap boxKmar wrote:
Arrogant is pretending to know the physiology of something you have never experienced. I'm not talking about the free choices they made prior to addiction.
Now come on, if I stayed gone for 2 years and then posted, you would still be saying, " we knew you wouldn't be gone long".Kmar wrote:
Btw welcome back lowing. We knew you wouldn't be gone long. Maybe you DO understand the powers or addiction..
Lol
the way someone explained it to me, the addiction to cigarettes occurs because the nicotine starts to 'hijack' dopamine receptors (I think it was dopamine). Normally when you have, say, a nice meal you feel satisfied afterwards because of the neurotransmitter release. But if you've started a habit of smoking after a meal, or even just smoking in general, then you're not gonna feel that satisfaction until you get nicotine in your system. Becomes a vicious cycle basically. Now, I could be totally wrong, I just heard that from someone. But it certainly makes sense.Uzique wrote:
i can't understand addiction to cigarettes or alcohol, really... i mean the buzz isn't even that great. alcoholism to me has always seemed like a grim form of masochism, an addiction involving overt self-harm as much as a dependency on a chemical... everytime you drink to excess you get so so so sick! at least with things like cocaine addiction, the ratio of high:downside is a bit more in favour of the 'buzz'. i imagine you feel like the fucking bomb on crack, so the allure is there... but with booze? you just feel like shit.
Agreed. I mean, I drink a fair bit, but I can never get drunk multiple nights in a row because it just beats the shit out of you. I really can't see how you could wake up, get drunk and then stay like that until you go to bed, and then repeat that over and over. It just sounds like hell.Uzique wrote:
