I'm running 10.4.11 on an intel iMac. Apple says I can't upgrade from 10.4 to 10.6 for $29 (can only be done if I had 10.5). Does anyone know a way I can get a cheap upgrade to 10.5 so I can get the upgrade to 10.6 for $29 instead of $129.

Apple says that but it isn't true. The $29 upgrade is actually a full retail disk (they just don't tell you that). If you buy the $29 disk and run the install on your 10.4.11 then you should successfully install Snow Leopard.

Hope that helps.

The problem is not that it won't work, it's the process that goes on behind the scenes with the permissions. 10.4 didn't use ACLs in the same way that 10.5 does and the changes to the permissions structure when installing are not properly performed in the upgrade edition of 10.6. I'm not sure booting to 64-bit kernel works if you upgrade from 10.4 either.

If doing a clean install this should not present a problem and pretty much any permissions issues you ever encounter can be resolved with a few chmod commands anyway and who ever boots to a 64-bit kernel - so it is certainly a viable option.

That's been my experience of it anyway.
