Maybe at fancier places. At most restaurants I go to, the waiter might say what the specials are but otherwise he doesn't suggest something unless you ask. At the fancier ones yes they do upsell certain dishes, at least in my experience.JohnG@lt wrote:
Right. Marketing. It's his job to try to upsell you so he makes better tips and the restaurant makes more money. It's why you are offered sides and desert and drinks etc. Not because the waiter is being nice, but because it means a bigger bill.Hurricane2k9 wrote:
The other thing I hate about tipping is that it's just based on price and not effort. It isn't any harder for the waiter to bring me a filet mignon than it is for him to bring me a caesar salad, yet he'd get more money for the filet mignon than the salad.
Every waiter in every restaurant top to bottom is supposed to upsell. Most of the time it's subtle and you won't even know it's happening unless you've worked in the business.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

I never tip because over here in civilisation we pay our employees a decent wage
Over here in barbaric America, our bartenders and wait staff pull in far more money on an hourly basis than yours do.Sturgeon wrote:

It depends where you are and how you're paying I think. If I'm drinking somewhere nice and put it all on a tab, then usually when you get the bill there's a place for tip, in which case I'll tip, just not as well as I would in the US. If you buy a drink at a regular bar/pub then then dropping some change in the tip jar is the best you'd do. And I only really do that because I hate having a pocket full of 1/2/5/10p coins.Toilet Sex wrote:

It's built into the price of your meal.Sturgeon wrote:

Only because you guys DEMAND a 15-20% tip. No matter if they do good or bad.JohnG@lt wrote:

No, if you get shitty service you'd tip less. Although it's only if they shat on your food that you'd tip nothing.RDMC wrote:

That's not true at all. If you get bad service you can leave no tip at all. You won't be welcome back in the restaurant of course, but if the service was that bad you wouldn't want to go back anyway.RDMC wrote:
