I doubt there's anyone here who only listens to new and fresh music and nothing else. Tell us about some albums or artists that have been big in 2010 for you, though they may have been around much earlier.

---

2010 has been all about James Lavelle for me. Oh noes! -1000 indie/hipster cred. Been a long-time UNKLE fan, but wasn't a fan of Lavelle's mixing. I recall listening to his older sets (ages ago; +500 indie/hipster cred) and not feeling impressed or even interested. They came off as basic and run-of-the-mill. I'm sure a lot of people still feel that way.

But this year I revisited them and was completely hooked. I really began to appreciate his style and enjoyed it a lot. Things don't have to blend seamlessly and transition perfectly. I like the various genres and styles, and all the ups and downs. Too often, it's easy to get lost in some prog-house mix that blurs together and makes you feel like a zombie, nothing sticks out, and it's all hazy.

I've also noticed he doesn't try to be bleeding-edge. There are many successful DJs who are constantly playing new stuff and never play the same track twice. That's great, but everyone else is doing it, too. With Lavelle, he uses a lot of the same tracks and builds and tweaks his sets; sort of like how a comedian will have his act and make minor tweaks to the wording of the jokes as he advances in his career, but the core joke is still the same.

I guess what it all comes down to is that he and I are very much alike. I listen to a lot of the same old stuff over and over again, know it like the back of my hand, but still enjoy it very much. I also enjoy a lot of the different sub-genres of electronic music, as well as forays into rock and sometimes even hip-hop.

Recommended mixes: Do Androids Dream of Electric Beats?, WWIII. His Global Underground sets (Barcelona, Romania, Bangkok) will have to do if you can't find the others. Fabriclive.01 is decent but more of a rough draft of things.

"Glasvegas - Glasvegas" and "Bloc Party - A weekend in the city" are two albums that I like to listen to all the way through, both I can relate to good good times in the past.

Being pretty new to umbrella of electronic music itself, I've discovered a lot of music this year. I should think I've spent the majority of the year listing to albums not from 2010, nor from 2009. I've been exploring labels' back catalogues, the origins of genres, and artists' discographies.

A group that has seen a lot of my attention is a trio that goes by the name of KILN. I don't really know much about them (short of regurgitating press releases and the "about us" on their website) and don't really know where they fit into the electronic community - but their albums Dusker and Thermals have certainly seen a lot of air time in my room this year. Those two albums are really rather different, incidentally.

Hit up those links I embedded - they take you to last.fm where you can sample their music, if you should be inclined.

No other artists stick out in particular because I've been listening to much new music. (New to me, not new this year.)

These are pretty safe picks from a critical standpoint, but Brothers (The Black Keys) and The Suburbs (Arcade Fire) have been the two albums I've listened to the most this year.  IMO both stand out as the best work so far by each respective group.

by far. has helped me get through a lot this year, i don't know how to describe it but i think this sums it up well:

"You know what Burial is like? Being awake at 4 am, smoking...maybe drinking.. with tears on your face..waiting for someone to tell you that you're not alone in this world. But that someone never comes..and it's 6.00 am and you're still awake..listening to Burial.."

don't know who wrote it though

destroyer is mint. I love Dan Bejar.

I saw The New Pornographers with some friends earlier this year. I hate that entire band except for him.

Nujabes, forever and ever. This year he taught me to chill.

Actually, more accurately: Gorillaz

I've really been into them this past year.

My brother saw them in concert a month ago.

Said it was the craziest concert he's ever been to.

Yeh seriously. This was part of my big post i was gonna post before realising all but 2 of them were from 2010:

I have to say, although it was a 2008 album, and I first heard it in the closing of 2009, Burial's Untrue has been my most listened to album of 2010. Back in april, and then heading to the summer months, I'd listen to every night, staying up til 3 or 4 in the morning. No other album, or artist for that matter, has been able to put me in a place, and capture the sort of feel and atmosphere that he does for me. Looking forward to the next album too

it's funny seeing people get excited over burial now, considering he was part of a long history of uk-london sounds that have developed... i dunno, of course i can't criticize the album choice in the slightest (one of the best electronic albums of 2000-2010, imho), but i just see burial as part of a larger, developing narrative that has loads of good stuff. definitely a stand-out record though, fantastic.

surprised there are so many secret destroyer lovers here! i've had a love affair with his song writing since i started university, really. extremely literate, very well-written, and wonderfully experimental/out-of-the-box. it's nice when you grow up and have major life experiences alongside listening to a singer-songwriter, too... i associate so many of his particular songs/albums with particular moments in my life. it's nice when music can emotionally permeate like that.

The first time I'd actually heard of him was when you posted Fostercare and I instantly loved it. I'm sure I've said before but since then I give everything you post a listen just cause that was so good, and there is a chance I might find someone I like as much as Burial. I'm glad I do, cause I've been listening to Pariah's Safehouses EP since you posted "Prism" too.

To keep on topic, the other album not from 2010 that I was gonna post:

I also gave Foreign Beggars a chance this year after hearing them on a Noisia track. Their first album "Asylum Speakers" (2006 I think) really appeals to me, and for the last couple of months has been what I'll listen to in the van on the way to work. I like the beats, they seem kinda different to me (probably not, but I don't know hiphop so shoot me), and the guys voices have this certain quality about them that I like.
