Thought about a 1911 either springfield or Kimber, but 1911's seem to be finicky to say the least and Kimber especially now has questionable quality from what the forums say
kimber is mostly a name brand ... I've got springfield 1911 and absolutly love that thing ....... what I really like about 1911 are parts easy to find and easy to repair or easy to modify .... after about 1000 rounds the only thing I've done to my springfield is drop the trigger pull from 5.2 lbs to 3 lbs

I've put a box through a HK but it just didn't sit well in my hands, I just couldn't get a comfortable rythme like I could with a sig

I've owned a few Sigs and been disappointed in all of them. Don't know if I'll purchase another.

I prefer the grip of the HK over the FNP-45, but the FNP-45 is less money and has larger capacity magazines.

Have you held any of them?

yeah, but never shot any of them..and as far as looks and features, they seem to match up pretty well. The FNP-45 and the HK are pretty big guns, not that the P220 is a pocket pistol itself, but to carry I think the P220 would be more manageable.

What didn't you like about your sigs?

I'd say go with the HK. My USP 45 is by far my favorite handgun. I rented the new HK45 the last time I was home and it was awesome. It fits in your hand like a glove.

Thats a nice 1911! Is that a "loaded" ? THe other thing I like about the sig though is the slide release is closer to my thumb than the 1911! Really wanna add a 1911 to my gun collection eventually but for this purchase I narrowed it down to the sig HK or the FNP

All three of your choices are awesome guns. Is there a range near by that rents guns? Your best bet is to shoot all three and see what you like the most.

I know nothing about guns beyond the specifics (wish I knew more ), but I've heard of a manufacturer called Wilson Combat(?) being good for 1911's. Dunno if that's true or not.

My gun range is about 40 minutes away, don't remember if any of those were in the case or not. My main concerns were quality in the gun as well as the finish, and reliability and customer service when shit does go wrong. Already have a Glock 30 and it is lighter than the others so I know what to expect out of recoil etc.. I can manage the glock just fine, I would expect an even more manageable recoil out of the other 3.

Those euroguns are pretty sweet aren't they

Adding an extended slide release to a 1911 is about the easiest possible mod is it not?

When you strip a 1911 you remove the slide release.
When you reassemble just replace with an extended one.

The 1911 is probably the most mod-able pistol available. There are tons of parts, accessories and upgrades available. If you don't like something about a 1911, I'm sure someone makes a part to change it.

1911s have more aftermarket and drop-in parts than any other firearm, but base models are generally not that accurate to begin with, so really you're best off buying something between base and premium.

Accurising parts generally need to be fitted by a gunsmith, and may tend to reduce absolute reliability, so again best to pick a mid-level quality 1911 and leave as is.

Or you can go nuts and pay $1,000s for something which will shoot 2" groups at 50 yards with handloaded ammo.
(Just don't buy a Norinco and lots of add-ons)

Also, I've never heard anything good said about 'chopped' 1911s, maybe Commanders are OK, not sure really.

Personally I'd pick a revolver with a good long DA trigger for self defense.

My USP45 shoots accurately, is exceptionally simple in mechanism, and goes bang every time with a monotonously boring Teutonic reliability.
Very easy to disassemble in the field - no small parts to lose, can be disassembled/reassembled eyes-closed in seconds.

Mine seems to really prefer 230 grain rounds, moving about 850-900 fps.
Very accurate with those.

i wouldn't say a 1911(as long as it's not a cheap pos) is any less reliable than most other pistols.  Just don't use shitty magazines.  most of the cops I know carry 1911s.   if I carried, I wouldn't hesitate to carry my springfield loaded.  For $1200 you could get an SA operator and probably have money left to buy a couple magazines. 

as for sigs, they're dead reliable.  the only downside to most sigs over 9mm is their relatively high bore axis.  without a hogue finger groove grip  my P220 tends to snap a bit. it's not uncontrollable or uncomfortable, but you notice it.

Can't say much about FNs and HKs other than the ones i've shot have all been accurate and comfortable, though they also tend to have relatively(to 1911s) high bore axis.  I prefer the ergonomics of my sig to the USP or HK45.  But they're basically all good weapons.

If I had the money to burn I'd be tempted to get the 5-25X56 PMII.  It's a great piece of glass.  For now I'm happy with my little USO.
