Laptop memory enquiry

I have an Acer Aspire 5553g laptop which currently has 4gb of memory installed, i want to add another 2gb of memory taking me 6gb total. Is it ok to run with 6gb or is it better to use 8gb?

The reason i ask is because the laptop has 3 memory slots with 2 currently in use with two 2gb matched sticks. If i add another 2gb stick into the 3rd spare slot will i get a performance hit because i would be taking the system out of dual channel mode, correct?

The slots also say 1.50v, do i need to buy appropriate memory that is verifed to work at 1.50v?

FWIW: The two sticks that are already installed in the system have these details attached to them...

Yeah using 3 slots will stop the 2 slots from bgeing in dual mode - which has a slight initial speed decrease, having more ram = more stuff can be addressed, so you can run more with a slightly lower response time.

So something like this would be ok to use?

I can't find anything by Kingston that matches what i have. That upgrade tp 6gb is roughly £20, for roughly £80 i can have a matched pair 8gb. Do you think for an extra £60 the performance will be worth it?

Probably not worth upgrading to 6GB in the first place. If you are just using it for gaming/music/web/word then you will see very little difference.

But that is just my opinion.

Download cpuz, from cpuid and that should tell you all about your ram. Also go to the manufacturer's website to find exactly what ram you need. And as tazz says; yes you will take a performance hit, but the extra 2gb will compensate for that.

I had 1gb in my machine, then installed another 2. The performance increase was amazing.

1 to 3GB is amazing. 2 to 4GB is not bad. 4 to 6gb, not so much unless you are editing huge files.

It's W7 64 if i didn't already state that.

So theres seem no point in fact? The GPU is an ATi 512mb and it uses system memory, i just thought the extra 2gb would help out.

Not unless you are doing some serious video editing or similar. The real world difference would be minimal.
