it still wouldn't be as good as one built in
built in ones know exactly what speed the car's going and the direction of the wheels, so if it does lose the signal for a bit in a built up area it still has a pretty good idea of where the car is

I was not aware that any GPS systems (other than performance ones used in racing - which use lots of gyros and accelerometers and stuff not really applicable to normal driving unless you are driving something that rolls all over the place (and even then that's used to determine things like tyre slip - not direction, which is usually either determined in SW or using dual antennas)) used anything other than GPS to determine location, speed and direction - it sounds feasible, but awkward and expensive to implement. Not something I would have expected to be used in practice - I'm curious to see some examples of this....
