well i found my way out by accident
just kept going and it eventually worked it's way to the surface

That only works if you have a cave entrance near your spawn point, or like I always do, beneath my house.
Although, once the feature to change spawn points with the last bed you slept in gets added, you could always build a bed at every cave entrance and back-track to that with the compass.

Added tameable wolves.
Added Cookies.
Sleeping in a bed now resets your spawn position.
Sneaking while climbing will hang on to the ladder.
Spiders will no longer trample crops and have walking sounds removed.
Sheep spawn in more colors, however rarely. (Confirmed: Brown, Pink)
Movement in flowing water is slower.
Flowers and Mushrooms are more common.
Cocoa Beans can be found in Dungeon chests.
Wheat grows more quickly.
The new default hotkey for the inventory is 'E'.
Added new block, Locked Chest, Related page can be found here.
SMP servers can now have a new world seeded with an option in the Server.properties file.
Bug fixes:
Zombies and Spiders now hurt you in all instances (previously could only hurt you if they were 1 block above your location).
"Ghost" slimes on SMP have been fixed (?).
New Bugs:
Beds do not always work as a spawn point.
Crafting Wooden Slab or Redstone Torch would make your game crash. (Was fixed a couple hours after version release, without updating the version number [1])
Tamed wolves seem to whimper in SMP regardless of health (?)
