hotmail account hacked ?

I opened my email tonight to find I had sent a bunch of spam to every one of my contacts, ive seen the same happen to email accounts of friends, but how do I regain control of it, simple password change? any other advice? Never happened to me in 10 years so not exactly sure how to handle it.

I just did a virus/spyware scan of my computer then changed my password when it happened to me.

Justice, it's not been hacked, someone will have sent you a spam email which infects your account, copies itself, and sends spam emails to all your contacts. just look for the offending email, change your password, and delete any junk/sort through your inbox.

That normally only happens when you use a client like thunderbird/outlook.

PS: Gmail.

Few Pointers about gmail:

You can send from any verified email.
You can apply filters to organise your mail. Here you can see I don't allow emails from facebook to clutter my inbox, but instead apply the label Facebook.
And it goes without saying, if you have multiple email accounts, you can forward them from that account to a universal account. So I have me@tazz forwarding to tazz@gm.. So I only have to check 1 inbox.
Finally, if you have a droid phone - you can sync all the contacts here with you phone - plus you can backup your SMSs to your gmail account too.

Wow, thats something I would never want to have. Google peeks at enough of my info as it is, they dont need to see my text messages too. And who hasnt disabled emails from facebook completely? I did that a good 3-4 years ago...
