Saying you mined all the raw material for a megastructure in Minecraft is like saying you farmed five hundred thousand Goombas on world 1-1 for coins in Mario. I don't really know what else to say but Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me. I guess I prefer to focus on structure rather than the legitimacy of material acquisition. It doesn't give me any greater sense of accomplishment having spent tons of time tok-tok-tokking away for easy-to-acquire materials. It's not as if you're going to use it to repel an orcish horde.
But, the real question is... Did you have fun? If so who cares about if its useful or not. I had a day off and need something to do. poof I've got 2 completely useless structures, but I had fun.
I love building completely useless structures too, just look at creative.minecraft. What I don't like is being asked if I mined for everything or not. I don't see the reason why it's such an issue with some builders, or why it needs clarified.
e: To clarify, if you needed more than a simple box to hide from creepers overnight, I'd place more gameplay value into farming for iron as opposed to building a fortress straight away.
The point I was trying to make is that I find it more fun and satisfying to mine than to use the give command. I think its more impressive that way versus just giving stuff out. I'm not saying that people don't create good stuff with the give command, but its not to my liking to do that when the game is called
Minecraft. But, people will play how they like it.
Edit: Grammar and probably still missed some.
