Hello. I installed Battlefield 2, and I played single player and multi player on a few different servers and it worked fine. Then my friend told me about a patch, so I downloaded the patch and installed it. Then when I went to play Battlefield 2, the screen would turn black for like 2 seconds like the game was starting, then it would take me right back to the desktop.

So I then decided to uninstall Battlefield 2 completely. After I did that, I updated my video card driver and reinstalled my chipset drivers. But, when I went to start Battlefield 2 after all of this, it does the same thing. Any help would be great, thanks.

Hello, I had the EXACT same problem, and after 5 hours of searching and trying, this is what I had to do to get BF2 up and running again:
From the EA website:
You can manually uninstall the game by removing the files and registry
keys associated with it. Be sure to follow these steps exactly as they
appear to prevent accidental file/program deletion on your system.

To delete the save files:

1. Open *My Documents*.
2. Right-click on the /Battlefield 2/ folder and choose *Delete*.

To delete the game files (in the default location):

1. Open *My Computer*.
2. Open the *C* drive.
3. Open the *Program Files* folder.
4. Open the *EA GAMES* folder.
5. Right-click on the /Battlefield 2/ folder and choose *Delete*.
6. Close all open windows.
7. Right-click on the *Recycle Bin* and choose *Empty Recycle Bin*.

To edit the registry and remove /Battlefield 2/:

1. Click on the *Start* button.
2. Click on *Run*.
3. Type *regedit* in the text field.
4. Click *File* and then choose *Export*.
5. Name the file *Backup* and make sure the Export Range is set to *All*.
6. Click *Save*; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
7. Click the *plus sign* next to *HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE*.
8. Click the *plus sign* next to *Software*.
9. Click the *plus sign* next to *DICE*.
10. Right-click on the /Battlefield 2/ folder and choose *Delete*.
11. Click the *plus sign* next to *Electronic Arts*.
12. Right-click and choose *Delete* on any /Battlefield 2/ folders.
13. Click the *plus sign* next to *Microsoft*.
14. Click the *plus sign* next to *Windows*.
15. Click the *plus sign* next to *CurrentVersion*.
16. Click the *plus sign* next to *Uninstall*.
17. Right-click and choose *Delete* on the key named
*{04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B}*.
18. Close the Registry Editor.

/Battlefield 2/ should now be completely uninstalled. If anything
appears to be working incorrectly after editing the registry, simply
double-click on the Backup file on your desktop to restore the old registry.

You may now reinstall the game, and reapply the patch. It is
recommended that you install the game to the default directory to reduce
the chance of conflicting file locations.

I had to remove any evidence of any previous install to get it going again.
Hope this helps. Do you also have Special Forces installed?

What patch are you installing? Is your antivirus blocking the game? Firewall? Maby give some system specs.
It's hard to help if there is not enough info. Sorry.

Try using the EAsyInfo that comes with the game. It can tell you if you do not have the required system specs.

The supported video cards are as listed below:

ATI Radeon

X700 (PCIe), X600 (PCIe), X800 XT Platinum Edition, X800 PRO, X300 series.
9800 series, 9700 series, 9600 series, 9559 (RV350LX), 9500 series, 8500 series.
NVIDIA GeForce

6600 (PCIe), PCX 5900 (PCIe).
5800 series (AGP).
6800 Ultra, 6800 GT, 6800.
FX 5950 series, FX 5900 series, FX 5700 series.

If you are not using one of these video card chipsets, the game may run improperly or may not run at all.  The game was tested to communicate properly with the aforementioned chipsets using the newest drivers.  If you have one of these cards but are still experiencing the issue, it is likely that the drivers you have are not the newest manufacturer version.

I just uninstalled the patch and the game, then reinstalled the patch and the game runs fine without the patch.  Here are my system specs:

Athlon Xp 2900+@2.08Ghz.
512Mb PC3200 400Mhz ram
Western Digital 80gig SATA Hdd
GeForce Fx 5200 128Mb Agp 8x

yeah i know the 5200 fx isnt supported, but it ran the BF2 demo fine almost a year ago, and can run the game fine now without the patch.  I just updated the to the most recent drivers.  Anything else i can try? Thanks

I'd put a phone call into EA before buying a new vid card.  That's what I did when it happened to me.  and they told me to manually uninstall, and reinstall, and I did, and it works now.

Make sure you update your audio/soundcard drivers, and download and install the latest release of DirectX.
