nope not really... ucl is actually better for english than both, technically. it's splitting a very fine hair. both are incredibly strong in the arts/humanities - it's just that oxford has the high-profile art-intellectual colleges (magdalen) and cambridge has the renowned science-y ones (trinity). basically no difference though; the top of academia is the top of academia, really. it's just down to preference about the courses. the m.phil in criticism and culture looks fucking amazing... the master's in englit at oxford looks pretty dry in comparison (and it takes 2 years). ucl do incredibly modern and innovative courses (as do rhul and kings), whereas oxbridge are obviously more interested in producing establishment scholars.presidentsheep wrote:

yeah, id assume a lot of u of t's rep comes from the fact that theyre apparently 2nd in the world in pumping out research papers. they also invented the multi-touch screens used in most touchscreen phones

Uzique- is it easier to stay in the UoL colleges or does it really matter? I get what you mean With all the top ones being just as good as each other, it's just a matter of finding a course you like more than anything.
The reason I picked kings over birmingham was the sheer choice in modules after the first year, birmingham seemed pretty rigid whereas kings let you choose from loads, sometimes spread across unis. (though the 1k scholarship for birmingham seemed )
I also looked at the years study abroad but found that sometimes it doesn't count towards your degree whereas sometimes it does. Plus i'm guessing accommodation is probably going to be pretty expensive.

not particularly any easier, no. i think the academic 'network' works in references and connections, really. most places ask for 2-3 referees and i think their recommendation really counts. i've got a top joyce scholar and a royal fellow writing mine, so should be pretty
winston there's a few good liberal arts colleges in america but generally wouldn't say they're any better than top uk ones for english literature. plus they're expensive as shit. colombia would be nice, though. particularly the journalism school!
