my professor is an expert on those. he's also a personal friend of joyce's current remaining grandson (who controls the entire estate), and had a big argument and falling out with him over the matter of the dirty letters. they're well known in literary circles and are even used in some criticism (though the theses are a little extreme and far out). they're pretty interesting... i imagine loads of writers have minds like that. joyce was an absolute genius but certain things never left him-- his catholic upbringing, for instance. very repressive, etc.etc...

So about her replies...
she was fine with the letters but didn't reply in such a salacious manner. she was a pretty modest woman, actually. joyce had all sorts of fantasies that were incongruent with her character - he even arranged for her to be unfaithful with one of his best friends, at one point, so that he could experience the emotion of being spurned to a coquette (obviously which translates into the central experience of leopold bloom, the main character of ulysses). it is almost a neurotic sexual desire driven by his art... don't read them as the perverse dirt of an old man. that would be to rather misunderstand joyce's character and personality. mostly, the guy just loved the sound of words and the joy of his own writing. consider his letters an exercise in writing as much as an actual expression of intent.

I'd put out if someone wrote me letters like that.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.
My next read. Two thirds of my favorite subjects.

i'm about halfway through that... it's really really good. you need a super memory and a pretty good understanding of philosophy, logic and maths to 'get' it though-- it makes no concessions to the casual reader.

Just finished a book about the Battle and Campaign of Blenheim that also contains a bio of the Duke of Marlborough. Interesting read about a time period of which I had been ignorant. In this particular battle, Marlborough was more lucky than good, and benefited more from the poor skill of his direct opponent, Marshal Tallard, than from his own plans. Enlightening how the fate of the world can turn on something as small as a failure to properly use natural defenses (in this case, a stream).
Blenheim by Charles Spencer (who, incidentally, is the late Princess Diane's brother).

Highly highly recommended. Applicable to all Western politics although the focus is obviously Australian.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.
