Need a little help here guys.

The rig I'm currently using is getting hit and miss framerates with games, all of which fall below the specs.

Two games notable for this are BC2 and Crysis 2.

Sometimes they work great, others pretty poorly.

My specs are as follows:

i7 870 3.00GHz
6GB RAM
GTX 460 1GB
1 TB HD
Monitor runs at 1680x1050

Now these are all above the recommend for both games and yet, in BC2 in particular, stuff gets pretty choppy. Now surely this should be running as smooth as can be, right?

Is it an optimisation issue or too much background shit? I defragged my HD last night, and that gave a noticeable performance enhancement. However, when I tried the games again this morning, they're back to their old ways.

Appreciate any help.

You should be running both games perfectly... I have a very similar setup (Phenom II 1055T, my monitor at 1920x1080 and only 4GB of RAM are the differences) so you should be seeing the same (if not better) results.

Have you perhaps updated to the latest Nvidia drivers? It could be that your drivers are causing problems for you. If you are using the latest drivers, then I would definitely look at what processes you have running in the background. Give CCleaner a go and clean up your registry and your system entirely. Then use the built-in tool to see what processes are running on start-up (it's more user friendly than the interface that Microsoft provides you with). Once you've turned some things off, restart your computer and test.

Take a look and also make sure your AA/AF is also not too high and your GPU settings (in the Nvidia control panel) are not turned all the way to quality. In all honesty, though, that GPU with your resolution should be be able to handle anything you throw at it, regardless of the quality settings in-game. I don't recall what I have set up in my Nvidia control panel (not at home until tomorrow night), but IIRC, it's all set to let the application handle everything and I have quality versus performance cranked all the way to quality (and I have a higher resolution).

What manufacturer produced your GPU? If you have an ASUS GPU, then there are a number of tools (Smart Doctor, especially) that provide you with a very user friendly way of tuning your GPU. Look into what utilities are available for your GPU (doesn't EVGA's overclocking tool run on all Nvidia cards? The same for MSI's Afterburner?) - perhaps there are software optimization technologies available that you're not taking advantage of.

I would bet that your drivers are sorely outdated and/or you have a lot of crap running in the background and on start-up. On BC2 with everything turned to essentially the maximum possible settings (aside from AA which I have at 8x), you should be getting easily 40+ FPS and the same on Crysis 2.

Check your list of processes running, maybe something is using a lot of CPU usage? Also, if you've overclocked your 460 make sure to revert it... my 260 when its overclocked a little over stock clock speeds (650mhz, stock OC) will lower its clock speeds because I would need a BIOS volt mod.

Another thing that has occurred to me: provided that after checking drivers and processes you STILL do not have optimal performance, run a malware check. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a good start. It could be that you've picked up a bug that is hogging your CPU cycles.

Also, are you running any distributed computing software like Folding @ Home? By default programs like these should be automatically freeing up CPU resources when other programs need to use the CPU, but if you've played around with the settings, you may have configured it incorrectly.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Not sure what manufacturer my card is (ordered this comp through Dell), but I'll have a look at the drivers.

I have Malwarebytes, the only problem is it says the database is outdated, but it fails to update. I can scan and it detects three issues with what I think is in the registry, but all it does is quarantine them. Best to redownload it?

Also, does CCleaner have a habit of deleting files, or does it just sort out the crap you never see?

Malwarebytes is finding something? If that's the case, then you definitely need to get that sorted. MBAM doesn't look at the registry, however, that's what CCleaner does. What I would suggest is this: reinstall MBAM if you can but when you download the installation EXE, rename it to something random in case the malware you have has the standard name for the installer EXE on its blacklist. Sort that out and then come and talk to me before you do anything else!

Once you're sure that your system is free of all malware (do multiple scans, not just one and rely on MBAM to say that you've removed it), THEN update your drivers. If you want to know what manufacturer your GPU is, you can likely find that out using Speccy (from the same people that make CCleaner) - it does a good job of showing you extremely detailed information on your system specs, including driver versions.

Well I did a scan with Malwarbytes and cleaned up the stuff. Used CCleaner, knocked my GPU down to performance and updated the drivers. BC2 now runs like a dream. Hopefully it will the next time I play it as well. Seems the drivers update did the trick though.

Thanks for the help

Edit: Crysis 2 running at full belt, full resolution as well

Try turning the GPU up to quality in the Nvidia control panel and see what that does for you, too.

Glad to see you're back to normal, though. Watch out for malware.
