I'm a Southerner.... Basically it is the norm to carry a pocketknife.  Not for reasons of only personal protection, but in case things need cutting.... How about multi-tools like a leatherman (pliers, file, can opener & knife) then?
you can carry a knife if it's being used as a tool, of course. over here carrying weapons falls into a category of crime known as 'state of affairs', i.e. a crime depending on the context of you being searched or arrested. caught carrying a pocket knife in the queue for a club on a saturday night? in trouble. caught with a knife pruning in your back garden, or carrying one in the woods? fine.

and thats part of the cultural difference .... I've always got my knife on me ... do I always need to carry my knife no but better have and not need it then need and not have it 

same with my pistol but I have a more need to carry then the average person ..... I have to pickup daily money from other businesses, so it doesn't long to figure out that I'm carrying large amounts of cash

We know, Brits can't carry guns without a permit and it is very fucking hard to get a permit. So they gotta substitute.
Wrong once again, Brits can't carry pistols at all, there's no pistol permit. There's a shotgun license which you can have at 18+ and a rifle license which is 18+ I believe.

As for knives, it's what uzi said. Any blade under 3 inches is fine to expand.
