Its why everyone shoudl take a simple job as a high schooler/student.
for your first job application it's a plus yeah but once you start your career noone is interested in whether or not you worked at mcdonalds or the supermarket on the weekends, might as well drop it from your CV by that time.

It's good to earn a little money next to studying but it really doesn't have much value for your career as a post grad.
I was going to say that working those little shit jobs aid in the development of a work ethic, but the truth is that they attract slacker types that will just drag you down with them You're almost better off walking into your first job as an unadulterated veal, fresh to the light and the sounds of the work environment. Until the idealism wears off, you'll be a highly motivated worker instead of the cynic that shitty dead end jobs produce.

It would be a neat experiment for a sociologist.

over here it usually looks good when you're applying for summer internships.
Internships? I'd argue that the important part is how well you're doing in your study.
Of course, but some prior work experience definitely helps.

hmmm lets break this down:

end-goal and ambition: PhD, academia.

current position:

undergraduate valedictorian, accepted for scholarship for next-stage of academic progress, already being recommended via several internationally reputed scholars to begin drafting PhD thesis so that they can put in their good word and help me secure the 3-year funding. on the side also doing an internship for one of the world's foremost music/arts/culture magazines.

nope, not really missing the character-developing experience of serving people fries in mcd's for $5 an hour.

but dilbert's criticisms are really hurting me right now!

Could be true, but I guess every post grad is a bit nervous about the 'real job' and will work. Maybe someone who hasn't had any previous 'work experience' will work more, don't know tbh. It's an interesting question.

What sort of valuable "work experience" does it really give you? These jobs don't exactly polish a specific skillset and aren't really difficult. They rely on basic social skills which you're supposed to have regardless of whether or not you distributed flyers at the metro station.

I'm just arguing here though, not saying it's a bad idea to get a side job but it definitely doesn't add anything of value.

i can say with absolute confidence that having not worked at a supermarket with morons does not lead me to question my ability to do graduate work at all. especially in the field i want to go into. at no point do i think "holy shit, can i manage this research proposal? i haven't even worked a till in my life!". and i don't buy the 'social skills' benefits of work. how socially awkward can you be if you need to be forced to get used to freely interacting by work? my my my.

Shocking, you're obviously not getting any engineering experience at a supermarket. The point is that they want to see that you can function in a working environment and that you understand good customer service and all that. If you've got two candidates for an internship and one has several years of shift manager experience in retail and the other has uh... err... beer chugging experience, guess who's gonna get the job assuming all other things are equal?

And for your first job out of college it definitely helps to have summer internship experience, since that's true experience in the field you're in.

i'm working a job next to but that's because i want to finance myself as a point of personal pride, now i'm 21 and have the financed degree under my belt. want to be financially independent. but that motivation has little to do with CV/career and definitely isn't "working to have spare cash for nice things". that's working to live. and i'm looking forward to that. but i still won't be working a supermarket, sorry.

Well yeah ofcourse, I'm not trying to discount the value of an internship. But; if I were offering an internship and had to pick between someone who's about to graduate with honors but didn't work, and another who's barely managing to complete his study but worked every weekend I know who I'd pick. Study results tell you much more about how the person will function in your company than their (almost irrelevant) work experience. Good results mean someone's motivated in your field, bad results... different story. Either he just sucks at it and you'll have to babysit him or he'll slack.

I work side jobs myself but I don't expect it to have any value for my future career.

It's a life experience, zique. I almost feel bad for you because there's a giant hole in your personality derived from the simple fact that you've gone out of your way to make it so you never have to work 'an honest days labor'. Can you change a tire? Can you change your oil? Could you put up a piece of drywall? Dig a hole without becoming instantly tired? These are simplistic jobs that you undoubtedly look down upon but I bet you couldn't perform any of them. If your life path was one that led to riches then you could probably get away with just paying other people to do everything for you. But you're not.

For someone that rails against the specialization that college has become, with their one-dimensional engineers and science people, you sure as shit seem to have turned yourself into such a highly specialized college graduate that your career choices are rather small. Irony.

Of course you wouldn't pick some moron who has been on the verge of failing every semester, I'm just talking about the cases where you have two candidates of pretty comparable academic caliber but only one has work experience.

In other news, summer party with the work last night, which was good fun. Bossman payed for everything, including a nice 3-course meal, lots of wine, and then drinks when we went out afterwords. Then bossman left and I had to pay for my own $13 beer. Yeah, I only had one.

So yeah, then I woke up still drunk, stumbled out the door to catch the bus, got to work drunk, secretly threw up in the company's toilets and spent the rest of my day coding web-pages and writing newsletters.

I set it to push the pages live over-night, which means any drunken errors can't be fixed before Monday. Which is kind of exciting.

Anyways.

Yeah.
