I'd been driving for about a year. We were on our way to the beach. For some reason we decided it was a good idea to leave at night, before a heavy thunderstorm started going through the area. I was driving the speed that everyone else was driving, about 60MPH... horrible horrible idea in that kind of weather. About halfway out, I hit a big pool of water and the truck hydroplanes and loses control. Luckily we were in the leftmost lane, and instead of veering to the right it veered in to the left guardrail. It kinda bounced off, went straight a few more feet then hit it again. Half the tyres were ruined, that front axle failed (as you can see), and the fuel line broke so after a few seconds the engine died. No fire and no injuries (I'm not sure how, I'm guessing we hit that guardrail at a lower speed than I imagined). Truck was totaled but I think, miraculously, insurance covered most of it. All I got was a $90 ticket for "speed unsafe for given conditions."

Needless to say, I never go that fast in the rain anymore.

e: the one funny part was that when I realized wtf just happened, I noticed that my iPhone was playing that song "Big Empty" by Stone Temple Pilots. The first line of the song is "Drivin' faster in my car..."

my friend hydroplaned and did a 360 on the highway going through the mtns in tn with me and 3 others in the car. 18 wheelers and other cars were flying past us. we somehow survived. i made him let me drive the rest of the way even though my license was suspended

Yeah I think so loubot. I think I basically freaked out and forgot what to do. They should teach that in driving school and even have you actually experience it in a controlled environment so you can really get a feel for how to recover from a hydroplane or a skid.

Yeah I mean they say "here's what you do" then go on for 20 minutes about the difference between DUI and DUI per se. No where near as effective as actually doing it.

lol they should also force you to drink and drive in a controlled environment and then have some pop-up target dummy thing pop up in front of you, at a distance where you could stop had you not been drinking.

would freak the shit out of a lot of people if they hit the dummy while drunk...

one time i was driving on the freeway at 5 in the morning during a storm and some douchebag decides to speed and cut me off even thugh we were the only cars on the road and 1 minute later i see him hyrdoplaning in front of me, hit the center divider and rollver on its top. served him right.

Ford Explorers have rear-wheel drive which is more likely to start fishtailing than the standard front-wheel drive vehicles. Let up on the accelerator and turn into the direction of the skid, if there plenty of open road in front of you, then you do not need to apply the brakes...coast until you gain control of the vehicle. when hydro planing, the worse thing to do is to slam on the brakes.

Take the Explorer in an empty parking lots with fresh snow, that ought to be fun.

Loubot that was an Expedition, and the fucker's probably been turned to scrap. Happened two years ago. Insurance preferred just paying out instead of fixing it.
