Cobalt SS hands down. Good mileage and power when you put your foot in it and wind up that supercharger. You can also throw on the stage 2 package with bigger injectors and smaller pulley on the supercharger for some fun.
Cobalt - better value than the tiberon (if it had same miles and everything i'd say get that). VW's are notorious for transmission issues and are more expensive to get repaired. If it were a gti it might even be worth the risk.
See I have heard bad things about them but at the exact same time I have friends with the 06 SS and he has never had a single problem with it. ANother friend has the Team Canada Edition and he has had no problem at all except he put in a new clutch but thats because he cant drive stick for shit.RTHKI wrote:

Same here. Buddy of mine has an 06 SS with no issues and he's had the stage 2 kit installed and a tune done by a local performance shop. Runs Amsoil full synthetic in it.

I'd hold out for a daewoo.
All I can say is don't get the VW. I have 3 friends with VWs made between 2000 and 2006, and their interiors fall apart faster than a wet tissue. And, as has been said, they seem to have a lot of minor mechanical issues that require maintenance. VW's are awesome when new, but they seem to go downhill quickly.

Get the Cobalt.
there's unreliable and horror stories for just about every car there is out there, personally i wouldn't be seen dead in the other two

You have a lot of friends that drive sub-$10,000 cars if I remember correctly.Toilet Sex wrote:

Someone on a budget needs to make sure they aren't getting a car that will turn into a long-term money pit. And I'm guessing that European-made VW's might have better reliability than their American counterparts. I know it's that way with Ford, and surely with other manufacturers as well.
I love VW's, but I wouldn't buy one until 1) I could buy it new, and 2) Afford to keep it maintained regardless of what went wrong.

Sorry, but the 4th gen Golfs were plagued with reliability issues in the US. My girlfriend has a Golf IV here in Austria, but it's the little 1.5L motor you can't get anywhere in the USA. It's not a horrible car, but it's not a car you want in the USA. VW makes it very difficult for owners worldwide to do home maintenance - this means if there's a problem, you'll likely always end up taking it to the dealer. German cars are not cheap to maintain in the USA at all. VW is seen more as an upscale brand in the USA, not a normal one like Honda, Ford, Toyota, Chevy.
In all honesty to the OP, there are much better cars out there that you can get for $10k - sports cars or a nice sedan. At $10k, the options are very nice in the USA.

it must be this. Golfs as far as i know are not known for being unreliable here in the UK, especially Golfs-CARNIFEX-[LOC] wrote:

Those are some fucking horrific looking cars.
The motors you get in the US represent a minority in the motors that make it into the European Golfs. Totally skews the statistics.Toilet Sex wrote:

Cobalt are fine...Colbalt SS on the other hand are uber shit...unless its a SS that is NOT turbocharged/Supercharged. In both case Turbo/Supercharge the motor will blow to pieces in a matter of time...Chevy just slapped a Turbo/Supercharge on an engine that was not designed for it at all, i have know many people who had to change their cobalt SS engine for said reasons. If you go for a cobalt remember those words of advices, No turbo, no supercharger and you'll be fine!GR34 wrote:

They have a reputation for reliability and keeping their price this side of the water.
Go Golf

VW's are not thought of as an upscale brand here in the USA.
Theyre all terrible
I dont know anything about the cobalt but it looks terrible and its a chevy so even more terrible
I would go the golf, check for perished breather hoses etc in the engine bay (very common) and strut top mounts are very common too (they get compressed over time causing noisy suspension especially when turning
And im sure being in Canada there would be more stuff to check for - im guessing its been on salted roads and stuff?

1. European car means it's more expensive to repair;
2. Has probably had the guts flogged out of it;
3. Is the one you should buy.

Subarus aren't sold in Canada?
I'd never touch a supercharger or turbo, especially in a 2nd hand car, but then I'd never buy a 2nd hand 'performance' car anyway.

Keep the lancer and slap a turbo on it, booya.

I'd say Golf. Tiburon is definitely out of the question.
I've driven the Cobalt SS, you'll find that although peppy and cool, it's a shittily built car. Everything rattles and squeaks, the interior finish is abysmal, the seats are painful and the boosted mechanicals are often prone to failing (that's what you get for boosting anything not deisgned specifically for it). I also hated the length of the doors.
Golf may be automatic, but it's going to last you a while. VW parts are easy to get if you know where to look, the car will look good for a while, and it's built more solidly than the others. Not only that, but it handles quite well.
