I feel like sharing a story, related to clans and BF1942, hopefully this is the correct spot.
Everyone has heard of the saying "Think before you act" or some sort of variation of it. Here's a fairly good example of 'not thinking' at all before acting, as well as laziness and other stupid things done by myself.
I remember in BF1942 I set up a server (run off my pc) where I thought I was a good pilot, so when the occasional player came to my server, I asked him (rarely if ever, her) if he needed some help flying. I had a keyboard at the time, but I don't like joysticks, and the game was fairly new, so I wasn't that obsolete. Soon, I met alot of nice people, and I started thinking about forming a clan.
First mistake: Not thinking at all. I was not that new to clans, I played RTCW (Return To Castle Wolfenstien) before, and there were many clans there which a few I tried to join. I was impressed because I usually stuck around with good, professional clans that were well organized, which my clan was good, but not enough, leading to its eventual demise.
Anyway, so the clan went well, members joined, I asked them funny questions, or attempted to test their accuracy with 'live' targets (another clan member) and I thought things were great. They were, actually, and we had a website. "Flying Fortresses" was our name and we had the tag |FF|, which was used by countless other clans, another mistake, since I was too lazy and didn't know about one of those phonebook type searches that allows you to look for other clans.
So there I had a clan that grew quite quickly to about 15 or so members, we had a meeting every friday, and practices right after that. We were still far from a professional clan. I was still kinda lazy as a leader and tried to let things sort themselves out and run themselves out. One of them was the merging with another clan. I was kinda lazy and asked people, kind of 'on the spot' if they wanted to merge. The answer was yes, since they had a server, so things went smoothly after that. I was kinda obsessed with being the leader, so I insisted that I do so, which I did, but it also lead to the demise of the clan.
Scrimmage. Lots of clan members wanted to join a ladder or fight other clans. Again, I was kinda lazy or disconnected so we didn't join a ladder, but we fought one other clan a couple of times in a fun match. We, kinda lost, badly, both times, triple figure to zero, them. But the fun of knowing we were having friendly competitions where we were doing just ok was good. Alot of the members were pretty good themselves, I suppose, but I thought I was the best. According to that (now defunct) bfstats website, I was in the top 2% of players, which made me feel very chuff with myself.
After a while, I went on a vacation, 3 weeks, I let the clan run, and when I came back, it had dissolved and broke up, and many members went their seperate ways. It was pretty much my fault, since I kinda left it hanging there, and I was real lazy and didn't do much.
Moral: I guess if you want to start a clan, you really got to work, keep things in order, fine tune everything, and don't think it will sail on it's own. I found, if you let go, it is like taking a cruise ship and puncturing a hole in the hull, once you do that, it will sink to the very bottom.
I hope this post was in the correct spot, and those wondering my name, I was "Maj Hochstedder" who promoted himself several times in the clan eventually to "Gen Hochstedder". So people that don't like me, well, I don't know, but perhaps I might have seen any of you on the fields of 1942.
