Yea it's there but is it functional or just a prop?

I've tried to get in the second gun, but have never been able to enter it.
Were do you stand to enter it?

For some reason, I have serious trouble getting kills on J-10s with the Phalanx guns.  The aft gun is pretty much just suicide.  The J-10 cannon can take you out before you're even aware that he's coming in, since a good pilot knows where to aim (he has the flag as a reference) long before you have a visual, and waaaay before the Phalanx turret starts to get a lock.

So, I use the superstructure turret instead.  Yes, the field of vision sucks, but you're actually better off for missile launches, as you tend to get a rear-on view of the J-10 that's just blown up the aft turret and raked the deck.  (Oh, by the way, you don't need to climb the ladder to get in the superstructure turret.  Go along the deck until you're just below the missile tubes, then jump and hit "E", and you should get in.)

And yet... even with his afterburners blazing away in the middle of my sights, a volley of missiles still manages to do... absolutely nothing.  At all.  Sometimes, it even looks like I get a hit, or even two, but the dam jet just keeps going.  It's really frustrating.  Sure, I get a few kills, but most of the time the missiles do nothing, and the cannon is damn hard to hit with.

Oh, and yeah, I've been one of those guys who launched missiles at a J-10 only to have them slam into a full blackhawk and get me a huge chunk of negative points.  That sucks.  That sucks a LOT.

Anyway, that's my moan.  While I can see the Essex being hard to attack with both turrets competently manned, that rarely happens, and a one-man defence team is frustratingly ineffective.

Thanks, will try this, I made the mistake of climbing up to it.

But most of the times I try to get in the Essex. A couple of easy kills, especially in the beginning of the round.

a good pilot can take out the guns no problem. If you are smart and use the blind spots of the guns/carrier to attack from and escape, you can easily always come in at a different angle to attack each gun (which gives you the advantage of strike first) and kill a gun, and easily escape through other blind spots.

Anyone who believes either of the essex guns can take down a J-10 with a half-decent pilot is fooling themselves. This isn't to say that you can't get a kill from those guns, just that a good pilot has no fear of them. With the right approach, speed and departure vector a good J-10 pilot will not get shot down. I've used the fabled second Phalanx to no effect (8 missles without a single hit is common against a good J-10, and they don't even use flares).

The "fix" in the latest patch to correct the spiraling missles knocked out thier ability to seek properly if a vehicle was in a hard bank. The AA sucks, we all live with it. My experience is that there is no "attraction" to the J-10 by any missle. That role gets to be played by the F-35 'Deathtrap'.
