So my family is moving and we have to switch to Comcrap. Very depressing to say the least. What's the best set-top box solution for Comcast users? We could just get the boxes from Comcast but that's kind of expensive in the long-run since you  have to pay an extra fee each month to rent it.

TiVo Premiere looks pretty good but I'm not a fan of the service fee (for $20/mo you might as well just rent the Comcast box, it's cheaper). We probably only need one box for the TV room. Also, f you plug the coaxial cable directly in to a TV, can you get the HD local channels or only the SD ones? It'd be nice to just need one box and then simply plug the cables directly into the TVs for the other rooms.

There are no other solutions available like say FiOS in the area you're moving to?  Comcast is perhaps the worst cable company ever.  You would almost do better by going to DirecTV or Dish Network.

Nope we're moving into DC which has no FiOS, U-Verse etc. I'm gonna miss FiOS dearly. And I do agree with your assessment, Cock-mast is like having a nail driven into your skull. Do you really think so about DirecTV? Have you used 'em before?

I have used Direct TV before. Shitty signal a lot of the time, pixelates. Granted that was years ago and I live in the lightning capital .. thunderstorm country . I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.

I have several years ago and the service was decent back then.  I'm sure they have improved since then. I would never get satellite simply because of the inconsistent Internet, in particular the upload speeds which would inhibit online play...however, choosing DirecTV versus comcrap....I'd have to seriously consider going in a different direction from Comcast.  Their infrastructure is ancient, their customer service is by far made up of some of the most inept individuals you can imagine, and their products are quite shitty.
