Is it possible to utilise the amp in my little 20w practice amp to plug my headphones (HD555s) into? Would it improve sound quality at all?

Yes, just start with the volume REALLY LOW unless you want to risk blowing your headphones. They will easily get loud with small adjustments. Afaik my amp was like that at least.

I would advise against taking an out directly from the main power amp as this is really risky.

I doubt, not if it's labelled "Headphones out". Might need an adapter, though.

Headphone out is fine because the output gain is at headphone level, not line level or a MUCH greater speaker level gain.
But, if you have any concerns or are simply paranoid you might damage your cans, make sure you select the correct output and start with all the gain wound down as low as it can go, then SLOWLY turn the volume up. If you're getting distortion, it's too loud. If it's distorting at a bare minimum turn of the dial from the lowest setting, you most likely have the wrong output.
