If you do want a near-new car, then keep an eye out for an ex-demonstrator/executive car. My parents got a $52,000 car for $40,000 because it had been used as an executive car and had ~1000km on it. 1000km is basically new and certainly not worth $12,000.

New car=bad idea. Higher insurance, higher upfront, less choice. Get a two year old car for half the price, still on warranty and low miles.

For 22 grand, you can get truly awesome used cars. B6 Audi A4, E39 5-series, E46 3-series, Subie WRX, etc.
Not this, you don't want a used 'performance' car, you want to save money.

Spend $11k on a 2 year old used car, put the other $11k in the bank for the first ten years insurance and servicing.

Buy a pickup truck, you'll be able to haul shit for when you move or your friends move. Or whenever you get furniture or larger appliances.

Or he could just buy a sedan for commuting, rent a van for a few hours a year when he needs it and let his friends figure out their arrangements themselves.

Is that really how people justify buying a truck?

i own a truck. and a sedan, and a commuter.

the truck tows my wave runner and takes me camping. the sedan i drive day to day, and the two of us on weekends. the commuter i let the wife drive to her job, it's 35 miles away.

your reasoning is void because you*re an ex-pat englishman living in a penal colony.

He's looking for a vehicle to to commute in, not three vehicles or to help people move house, did you read the OP?

If you want something to commute in, find a used civic that hasnt been riced out or owned by a teenager (usually goes hand in hand). Or a honda fit, those get great gas mileage.

@ everyone telling me to buy used, i would, and i'd prefer my dad went that way, but he's chipping in a good portion of the money and he's being really stubborn about getting me a new car rather than a used car. i don't get the logic, believe me... but it is what it is

wtf?
Apparently the student housing is in the ghetto. Her car was broken into multiple times to the point that it was eventually totaled due to all the vandalism.
I'm living on campus, so I doubt that'll be a problem. I'm not living in the student ghetto.

Does he know much about cars? Seems to me he doesn't really. Tell him that you're young, buying a new car is silly at your age, you feel you can get a car that's only 4 or 5 years old for about half, if not a third of the price of a new model. You're saving him money, and surely, he'll appreciate that. Most people I know would bite their parent's arm off if they offered them a new car, but you're sensible enough to realise you'd be fine with a used model.

he does know a lot about cars actually, so it's even stranger that he's pushing a new car. his logic is that used cars are more expensive nowadays because people can't afford new cars, and that if i bought a used car i'd end up paying the equivalent of a new car in maintenance fees. plus he figures i'll be "safer" in a new car

like i said, i can't control his logic and beggars can't be choosers. i'm only chipping in $2000 and he's doing the rest up front since i'm gonna pay him back by taking out financial aid for college (state school tuition rates anyways, not much more than $20K) so his bills are substantially lower, so it's hard to tell him "nope, you're wrong, let's buy used"

he has a point when he says new cars are safer, spose you can't fall him on that one, and since he's yer dad he's gonna want you in something safe, I know I would want my kid safe.

So, from here on in, we know he needs a new car

Couldn't imagine spending $22,000 on a car when you're young. Even if I won the lotto I'd still only buy a second hand Toyota Corolla or something, nothing over €6,000 anyways..

Save your money and go here instead

now that looks a good time..

the best of those three is the civic.  It'll have the best resale value and it won't be a clunky, rattling piece of shit in two years.  even a fucking kia can have good initial quality,  that don't mean dog shit.  it's how it sounds and feels a few summers later... when that smell is gone.  keep her in good fluids and round tires and you'll be set.

For safety I'd pick a slightly larger used car over a small new car.
You can't beat mass and extra distance between you and the other guy.

Apparently Poseidon's dad never saw the movie Road Trip. Never buy your college kid a new car. Never. Dumbass.
