I think people think they sound cool asking for drinks 'on the rocks'.
If they asked for "Whisky, watered down a bit, and not too warm" that wouldn't sound nearly as tough.

Also I got ice in drinks when I was in Italy, because it's not cold in Italy.

i have soda maybe like once a month and when i do i have a good bit/get a refill if i'm at a fast food place or something.

i don't put ice in my drinks unless it's served that way or it's warm and i'm trying to get it somewhat chilled asap. that's why we have refrigerators.

Tap water is legally required to be available free of charge at restaurants in the UK. Mineral water not so much.

I'm pretty sure any license to serve liquor here in Ma. requires you to serve free water. We even give you free lemon for your water.
