I've tried searching for a solution already, and found some fixes that did not work for me, but I am hoping some of the tech guys here on the forum might have some experience with this problem.

I left my laptop plugged in for about 1 1/2 years (never needed to use the battery), and now the battery won't charge. On the Tool Bar I get the message "Plugged in, not charging".

Some forums say the battery is dead and needs to be replaced, others that it is a software issue with Vista (I have 32bit Vista), and still others say it is a motherboard problem.

I have tried uninstalling Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and reinstalling as some guides said to do, but to no avail.

How should I proceed? I can buy a new battery for about 40$, which is less than it will cost to have to laptop looked at by a computer store here in town, so I am thinking I should go ahead and do this first.

I've exactly the same issue with my Lenovo T61p.
Battery just decided to stop holding a charge at all.
Hasn't worked since I installed Win7, but that seems coincidental

Most likely the battery is hosed man.  The only way to be sure would be to swap it with a known working one.

Alright guys, thanks.

Will have a new battery by the end of the week. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ni-Cads(if it is) developed memories from your charging habits. It is not good to use a battery to half power and then charge it to full. But I learned this in my teens when I was into RC car racing. The battery most likely needs to be replaced.

All modern electronics use Li-Ion batteries now. Don't get a memory per se but will eventually hold less charge (age, use).

New ones are about A$70 on eBay.

Charge the fuck out of it first time (12hr plus).

Just got the new battery today.

All is well again.

Strangely, though, my old battery had started charging for a little wile and made it all the way to 76% before shitting the bed again.

You guys to realize that batteries lost life over time correct? They eventually totally crash and need to be replaced. My best advice would be to look at online reviews for stores selling used computer batteries and making an informed decision. Do you ever use angies list, they have a ton of reviews.
