Well the last time Jobs (albeit forcefully) left Apple they nearly imploded. There is a precedent when it comes to Apple.
IIRC, Tim Cook was picked by Jobs to be his successor (or at the very least he recommended it to the Board). He probably wouldn't have done that if he didn't think he had the chops.
