Simple way to get lumber...build one of these, or go into the building and area shown on the bottom right from exchange:
Each level will provide about ~90 lumber per average full harvest. I have two levels going on, digging a third and have an offshoot from the second level down for birch. It's a bit more fancy than the diagram (neat walls, extra 1M added for non-dirt ceilings), but I'm trying to fix my stuff up nice.
Been done a million times. No need to steel wood at all.
Without something like it, getting all the fence for the torch 'stakes' or burning all of the stone bricks (and using wood) for half-block enderman-proofing would've been impractical:
