Im finding quite a challenge to admin our BF2 server.
I've admined Couter-Strike and Natural-Selection servers for years, but im finding BF2 is alot more difficult.
We have 2 main rules on our server (apart from the obvious no teamkilling, stats padding etc)
No FIXED basecamping, including artillery
no bunnyhopping
These rules wernt set by me, but Im usually the only one who admins the server most of the time. So firstly, no bunnyhopping.
Thing is, unless I actually see someone do this in front of me there is very little I can do about it. If someone says to me so and so is bunnyhopping, how can I tell for sure? Well anyway those found bunnyhopping will usually get a kick. It states in bright green writing that you cant do it, so as far as Im concerned that is their warning and if they get caught, its a kick.
Second no FIXED base camping. Problem is, no fixed base camping is a very broad term and can mean any number of things. Id definatly say for example a US chopper howevering over the MEC chopper spawn point in Shiraqi would be considered fixed base camping, or a heli hovering over an enemy aircraft carrier.
So what about planes that attack the aircraft carrier, they arnt camping it as such are they? I mean its pretty hard to 'camp' travelling at 900. However, what if this plane circles around and attacks again, and again?
Is this fixed base camping?
Where do you draw the line? Is for example a tank waiting 50 metres outside a fixed base, fixed base camping? If he lets enemys get just outside the base, then kills them?
And what about when special ops go in to blow arty and UAV, are they camping? Surely I must allow spec ops to blow commander toys, but when is it considered base camping? If they then go to steal a vehicle to escape and attack people in a fixed base to do so, are they now fixed base camping? Infact if they even shoot at anyone to defend themselfs, they could be considered base camping?
Now apart from the set rules there are other situations the need to be considered.
Take for example that there are 4 people waiting for the chopper to spawn. Say I get in as driver and someone else as gunner, and 2 people miss out. Now Im a reasonable good chopper pilot and say for example my gunner is just looking around but not shooting at anything. Say im still flying around after 25 minutes, and my gunner had not shot at a single thing, and has just made points from driver assists.
Now, is he breaking a specific rule? No he isnt. However dont you think it is unfair on the other people who missed out on getting into the chopper who could be actually doing something instead of sitting there?
Do I kick him? What if he shoots say once every ten minutes and say maybe kills one person per 30 minutes? Where do you draw the line?
I ask because I want other peoples opinions so that maybe there can be a more standardised definition of this rule across a larger number of servers, so that people are well aware of exactly what they can and cant do.
I know I just use my own discretion, sometimes people think I am harsh, but its the way I admin a server.
FInally, my last point, in my opinion people that walk infront of planes/choppers/vehicles because they didnt get to drive, with the intention of being temkilled as a form of revenge, NEED TO BE PERMANENTLY BANNED WITHOUT WARNING. These people are the lowest of low scum on BF2 and have no place playing it anywhere imo.
Anyway I look forward to your opinions.
