just seems like you would be "upgrading" to another bottom end rig.
The thing is, whilst I need a new rig, and I can afford to drop 500 quid on an i5, I'd rather not.

I really just don't see the point in constantly maintaining a bottom end rig. A i3 2100 should have better gaming performance for a similar price. Get something like that and a mobo that will allow crossfire or sli down the road.

Oh god the Xeons need to leave that chart... although drinking could make it more difficult to read.
I'll sell you my Q9300/4GB 1066/P35-DS..4(?) for pretty cheap if you want. Not sure if that's better/worse than what you currently have, though.
