Slapshot, for the first time in years, more
i agree, for the most part, on your critique of GoNY - but still... it is a film aimed reasonably high with excellent production, and horrible bosses is just a ten-a-penny hollywood comedy made to spin some cash for a studio. even if horrible bosses was supremely well executed, it would still only ever merit a 7/10 in my books, as far as an overall scale of film goes. it just doesn't aim very high, or risk very much. gangs of new york is a pretty mega project, by comparison, and carries off a lot of fine touches that horrible bosses cannot even compete with.justice wrote:
It's a fair point, my ratings probably don't make much sense from a purely critical point of view.
Gangs Of New York was hugely disappointing, I had big expectations. 7, was what Horrible Bosses maximum score would have been before I even watched it, given it's context there's really no way it can achieve any higher that that, but it delivered well, it did what it was set out to do, so it achieved it's maximum rating. Gangs Of New York, with it's cast, director and budget was capable of being a 9 or 10, it was a massive let down, it didn't even come close to fulfilling its potential, 7 would have been "pretty good," but I thought it even fell short of that. Which did I enjoy more? Horrible Bosses, and many people think Gangs Of New York was a flop (despite it's fairly high IMDB rating), if you take Daniel Day Lewis out of that film, it turns into a pretty shit film then, the acting throughout is awful, as is the plot construction (IMO). so in that regard I feel my scale is accurate if you are comparing those 2 films. I wouldn't watch a film that I would expect to be a 5, that's why I rarely have low ratings.
Anyway, I don't consider myself to be a film boffin Uzique, you need not worry. If I did, BF2s would be the last place I would post any sort of review, I just come in here straight after I've finished watching and put a rating and some comments, based on my "personal" scale, is it consistent or not? That's a matter of opinion really.

Cars 2 - ?/10
I spent most of the movie staring at buildings and environments and trying to see how the designers made them all "vehicle accessible." Other than that, I think a tow truck flew around and boats were angry.

Try Witches of Eastwick.

I meant the artists had to revamp structures to get them to work with the characters. Spiral ramp on an oil derrick instead of ladders, for example. I was sucked into watching that more than the plot.

Thinking about grabbing another TV show. Smallville worth watching?
The Descendants - 9/10
Thought it'd be an emotionally manipulative, sappy kind of movie, but ended up being really moving without having to make you hysterical. Had a fantastic storyline about a dad trying to raise his kids and handle his own life while his wife's in the hospital with a coma, and as he cares for her he finds out some dark secrets about her life, and he still has to keep his kids going in the healing process all the while knowing what she's done.
Really worth a watch. Plus the older daughter is absolutely gorgeous

don't watch it
my only thought throughout the film was that if everyone is given 1 year to as currency to start them off, and that's a pretty big amount, then you'd just have tons of east asian farms churning out slaves that are kept until they turn 25 and you can steal their year. That was my only thought, the plot was that uninteresting...

Immortals. - 2/10
Pretty awful. 300 was way better (!), acting was shoddy, story questionable and plot holes bigger than Greece's debt problem.
I didn't expect much, just went for the gratuitous violence etc. but it wasn't worth it.
3D was crap as well.
