What is Thanks Giving?

What are you celebrating?

Why have it today / (same day ever year)?

I dont read WIKI stuff really and I think its better hearing it first hand than a blog or through Google.

Do you get the day off today in USA, is it like a practice Christmas?

Traditional thinking, it's a celebration of the the first meeting/feast between dirty Euro Pilgrims and Blood thirsty savages.

Like every other holiday in the US, it has been commercialized and it is regarded as the beginning as the holiday shopping season.

Ahhh ok that sounds good. I could manage that. Id be in trouble if I had to find gifts for people now and again in a few weeks at Crimbo. Not only the cost but my folks are loaded and welthy, what can you buy the person who has enough money to buy anything, and owns most things you can buy? Imagine having to do that twice.

So Its Thursday with you today, Im guessing its a National Public Holiday - No Work? Do you get an extra long weekend, or do you have to go to work tomorrow?

Yea, it always falls on the last Thursday in Nov. It's a National Holiday. Most businesses, including retailers have the day off. However, at the stroke of midnight "black Friday" begins, and all of the madness. I'm more of a Cyber Monday guy myself.

Thanksgiving is like the calm before the storm.

They would mark the first Friday after Thanksgiving as the start of the "Christmas shopping season" in order to best track sales and other things. Now it's turned into a day of super sales in order to kick off the shopping season/cycle.

They shift their stock, you get all the good deals, for one day or so only it seems. Why the hell call it 'Black Friday' that tends to get associated with markets crashing

Well, Spain actually treated their native Americans pretty well. That whole black legend thing forever distorted Spain's history with their natives. The truth is- Spain was far ahead of anyone else in terms of humans right in the world, especially in their colonies.

Great Britain's history is sorted. It's all over the place. Some colonist worked well with the natives and treated them nicely. Others slaughtered them. The natives paid them back in near equal terms.

I only know a little of France's history with their natives so I can't give it a definite good or bad. From what I do know, the tribes in Canada has a great trading relationship with the natives up until Canada was traded after the 7 years war.

Besides it wasn't war and European conquest which devastated the natives. It was disease. Completely accidental.

And Beth, the Spanish were good to the Natives because they needed them to help find New world treasures, ie gold. Queen Isabella herself insisted that Columbus bring pigs to NA (Queen Isabellas Pigs), and the disease they spread was responsible for wiping out more natives than anything else.

What an incredibility bias piece of text to quote. "Philip II of Spain was a Catholic king who hated Protestants and considered them heretics". Well the Hapsburgs and the rest of the Catholic were trying their best to stop the reformation during the whole reformation wars. The HRE and Philips father, Charles V, was also trying to stop the reformation in Germany since it undermined Imperial power. The Lutherians would have done the exact same things to do a Spanish fort.

I remember from some of my readings, how Charles V, made the proclamation of 15something that declared the rights of the natives, forbade their slavery and forced labor, and tried to increase their conversation. This was made in response to falsified reports by Spanish monks of Spanish cruelty towards the natives. (the church in 'New Spain' was having power struggles with the generals). Also the Spanish initial intentions wasn't the complete conquest of the new world but instead forced vassalage. The Spanish scheme of controlling the native's through their leadership blew up into a full war. Furthermore the natives and their offspring always had higher social status than blacks regardless of the freedom status of the blacks.

I'm not saying the Spanish weren't responsible for a lot of natives deaths, intentionally or unintentionally, but as far as legal rights and in on a de facto level the natives of the Spanish colonies were much better off than the natives of any other colony.
