Would give it a 6.5/10

Once you suspend your disbelief--you're watching a movie about aliens invading late-1800s western US, ffs--you realize any other nit-picking you do is gratuitous. A few easy-to spot plot contrivances (it's a sci-fi movie, after all) and one plot twist. Still better than I was expecting.

Muppet Movie 8/10

Excellent flick for the kids, with enough grown up humor to keep the parents engaged. Jason Segel did an awesome job writing and producing, and the 80s schtick throughout makes it highly entertaining, while tying it back to the original for those who remember.

Cowboys & Aliens: 5/10

First of all, this is about Cowboys & Aliens FROM OUTER SPACE. Not Mexicans. Just wanted to make this clear up front.

This movie started off pretty good, and I kept thinking people really underrated this, it isn't bad. But about the time the aliens showed up, I  realized, it isn't good either. Wasn't much to keep my attention and I was on here, reading a thread that mentioned Red Alert, which made me decide to install Command & Conquer on my laptop. I played the crap out of the Red Alert games, so instead, I installed Generals, and Zero Hour. My wife pointed out to me when the movie was over, and I finished the level I was on and went to bed.

The Good in this movie: The Cast, and some of the Western landscapes.

The Worst thing about this movie: Bullets seem to bounce off the aliens in the first half, but Indian arrows, fired from bows that look like they are just flinging the arrow about 5 feet, then letting gravity carry them down to their targets, stick in the aliens just fine. Sharp sticks also do more damage than bullets. I was going to put this part in under the spoiler tag, but decided that people might need to know this in case aliens even invade. Put down your guns. Pick up sticks. Like the game little kids play. Pick up sticks. That is a secret alien defeating method passed down from ancient Egypt, the first time aliens attacked. It is just disguised as a kids game. Trust me. It will save the world. Pray we never have to use a barrel of monkeys.

In Time - 7/10

Very enjoyable, different plot than most movies and I loved how the dialogue was written. Justin Timberlake can definitely act and it was nice to see him in a role like this. I was really skeptical but my girlfriend and I left the movie each with a grin.

don't watch it

my only thought throughout the film was that if everyone is given 1 year to as currency to start them off, and that's a pretty big amount, then you'd just have tons of east asian farms churning out slaves that are kept until they turn 25 and you can steal their year. That was my only thought, the plot was that uninteresting...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 7/10

Good special effects and great action sequences. Interesting seeing Caesar's origins. But I can't help but think that some elements of the plot were a bit contrived:

Spoiler (highlight to read):
1. Why did they let an enraged chimp (Caesar's mom) out of her cage at the beginning to go on a rampage just to have her shot instead of tranqed?
2. While administering an untested mind-altering viruses in an aerosol form, why were the scientists only wearing flimsy masks and not space suits?
3. Whan Sock (sorry, Reaper reference) was blasted in the face with said virus within full view of everyone there, why was he not quarantined?

The Smurfs: 4/10

I was bored. The kids were bored. I love the cast of this movie, but it tried too hard. When a kid's movie about little blue people can't entertain any of a 3,6, or 9 year old, it sucks. The only two things I thought were good in this movie were Spoiler (highlight to read):
the smurfs' battle chant (it was genius to turn such an annoyingly happy song into something dark) and in the credits it said "No digital cat was harmed in the making of this film."

By the way, the kids favorite part was also the credits, as random smurf pictures from the old cartoon are next to the words and they tried to be the first one to name each one as it scrolled up. When THAT is the kid's favorite part, that should tell you something.

Fright Night (2011): 6/10

If you watch it like a cheesy horror B-movie, it was pretty good. If you are expecting a quality A-movie, it is not as great, but still ok. David Tennant almost stole the movie (if he were in it more, he would have), but honestly, Colin Farrell was pretty good in it as well. I wasn't expecting that. Decent simple vampire movie. Not much horror to it overall though, plus a PG-13 rating gave it a teenager movie feel.

Fright Night (the new one) - 7/10

Silly bad guy motivation and a slow ramp up, but good fights. David Tennant and Colin Farrell dominated the show. I could care less about the kids until

Spoiler (highlight to read):
One of them lit himself on fire and jumped the head vampire. Cool.

Top of the line for a B movie.

Friends with Benefits: 7/10

Just watched Friend with Benefits...
This is how I imagine this movie came to be....

On the set of Black Swan:

Mila Kunis: Hey Natty, so now that you are done filming here, what are you going to work on?

Natalie Portman: Oh, a movie about a couple who tries to have sex and stuff without getting into a romantic relationship. You know, like a No Strings Attached sort of thing...

MK: Oh that sounds fun... Who is your friend with benefits in it?

NP: Ashton Kutcher.

MK: WHAT THE F***? You are taking MY Kelso and making a movie about having sex with him????

NP: What? I thought you would be happy for us.

MK: NO way, no freaking way, this can't be happening... I mean, seriously, who would even believe it? He is like 6'3" and you are like 5'3"... He would look like he is trying to kidnap you.

NP: Ha! That is funny... I think we may use that.

MK: The hell you will!

NP: If it makes you feel any better, the movie makes me look like an emotionally unavailable bitch, and makes him look like an awesome guy.

MK: But I bet he still ends up with you at the end, doesn't he??? WHORE! I tell you what I am going to do, I am going to find a new Kelso, and he will be funnier than Ashton and the movie will be better and everyone will like it more and in MY movie, I will look like the good guy and I will make New-Kelso the emotionally unavailable one, BUT I will still make him likeable too, everyone in my movie will be likeable, and you will just be that bitchy chick that Ashy never should have gone back to! HA!

Beginners - 9/10.

this was a really good movie. i actually liked ewan mcgregor (he's an actor i always want to like, but then always end up disappointed). his character and performance in this were great. and of course, melanie laurent! a great depiction of love, there. the supporting act put in by christopher plummer is nothing short of award-winning, in my opinion, and adds a second great narrative arc to the movie that is surprising and works really well. best of all though is the art direction and cinematography of the film - including the soundtracking -: it is simply toprate. i definitely have a new found appreciation of mike mills after watching it.

Turned it off at the "sorry I can't make it to your birthday, son" cliche. I immediately knew what the rest of the movie was going to be about. May try again later.
