I don't what is causing the problems I have been having but it is highly aggravating.
My main issue that I have been facing is trying to join a server. I select the server and BF2 goes thru the motions of loading the map and all. When I click the Join button, the sound loops for a few seconds (15s +) and then I get kicked back to the servers screen. If I actually make it into the game, as soon as I spawn (or very shortly afterwards) The game will stutter, the screen freezes, the sound loops and then I get the connection problem message and I am back out to the servers list.
I have defragged (using disk keeper, not the chincy MS defragger), cleaned house in my OS, checked and applied the latest OFFICIAL hardware patches, but so far none of this has helped me at all. I have cleared my BF2 cache folder, I have unistalled and reinstalled, but nothing has really helped.
I have a machine capable of running the game. The game actually ran better when I had a lesser performing vid card than what I do now.

My current PC specs:
A64 3500+
DFI ultra LanpartyD (Nvidia NF4 board)
1gb OCZ
BFG 7800GT
WD Raptor
using on board sound (don't think this is the problems as this problem is new and I have the board for a while)
Running high settings except for shadows set on low and lighting on med, 4xAA.
Res is 1280x1024 (60mhz)

Anyone else having issues like this????

Chane your video settings to low, Check make sure you don't have any thing extra running in back ground, (I.E firewalls, antipopups, and so on Bf2 hates anything running other then game ) also try this

click start, click run, type in msconfig, go start up when window loads, hit disable all,hit apply, and ok. It will ask u to restart the PC, do it! when windows loads up pop up will come up , telling you about the changes tick the box and hit ok now start BF2 see if you still having same troubles.

mmm...my friend had the same prob. it had to do with XP not supporting his sound card! you have XP? If so then this might also be your problem! If your using onboard then click control panel, system, device manager then pick the hardware you use and see if its working properly. If so then go to start, run and type dxdiag....let it run through its setup and then test ur sound and you ay aswell test everything else there! If this doesnt bring up any errors then chances are its not supported(i think )

did you upgrade you vid card without reinstalling the os or atleast using a driver cleaner?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The new vid card was installed with a driver wipe and registry cleaner.  The problems seem to have started after that upgrade. I later formatted and did a fresh install of windows. That didn't help.
The sound card is ok, I already checked it.
I have nothing that runs in the background while gaming (with the exception of TS, but that has no bearing on the problem at hand. I thought it may have but it didn't matter if it was running or not).
I routinely check what's running in MSCONFIG as I am always installing or uninstalling something.
I'll do some other checks.
I suppose it could be a packet issue as well. I'll try changing the LAN port I am using and try using Nvidia's LAN port and see if that helps. It's currently running on the Marvell port. I don't think I have tried that out yet.

Sound card works fine. Reverified with dxdiag.
Changing lan ports did nothing to improve, nor did the most basis graphics settings. I'm stumped.
