Up here a college is like a technical institute with real world applicability as its foremost driving principal. The universities are your standard academic institution (unless you go to a shit school where they only teach undergrads)

In the narrow academic sense of the word, yes you are correct. In the larger more socially recognized lexicon people use college and university interchangeably. I would wager that college is used more often than university when people are talking about universities anyway.

Bit different here. Like I said, I belong to the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs up at my school... but my actual school is the University at Albany. People just say "I'm going to college" as an expression like they would call a group of people "guys" even if there's females. Same concept. But they are not at all the same thing. There is a "Harvard College", but it's located within "Harvard University".

Well you did say they were synonymous, indicating that they were both essentially the same word for the same definition, of which they're not. Yes, I'm being meticulous.

It's interchangeable. Most universities have 'schools' as in the 'Cockrell School of Engineering' or 'Kennedy School of Government'.

My university is also has 7 constituent colleges, but nobody every says they're from "college". I attend University College, and only ever tell people who are within the school and would know what the hell I mean.

Sucks that you get absolutely no choice in courses. I guess some people like knowing what's to come.

I guess one benefit if I took it now is my diploma counts toward a year's worth of credits.

My cousin did the same thing with accounting at the University of Windsor. I would do it; a degree is a must for the most part.

Better yet, I'll get a job and see if they will pay for it

Only problem with that is they usually demand you sign a contract stating that you will remain with the company for 2-4 years after the completion of your degree. If you leave you are forced to pay back a large percentage of the cost yourself.

I'll see how the next 6 months or so pan out. If I can't find a decent job by mid-summer, I'll definitely consider the degree.

It's nice being done college and not having any debt...the thought of a loan for a Uni program kinda scares me

All this talk of school reminds me that even with a year done, I still won't graduate until Spring of 2015.

I will also experience the joy of a debt-free twenties after graduation thanks to a cushy summer municipal government job.

And Poseidon, those years will go by very quickly. Don't be in a rush to give up a near no-responsibility life!

no fuckin' idea rick, i know quite a few state schools have these really long breaks. some folks do winter semester but i really didn't wanna do that, especially since there weren't many classes relevant to my major.

Within a university system, yeah. A standalone college doesn't offer masters/doctorates.
