For 1v1 you can best use an RTS, problem is, were not all experienced RTS players and i thought this was supposed to be a very open tournament. The learning curve is simply to high on those games.
Honestly, if you want to host a tournament on BF2s, let people make teams of 4 and pick a FPS like BF2 (or 3...), CoD1 (or 4...) or TF2.
1v1's in a FPS are just not entertaining or a real display of skill
Quake Live is so much better as a duel mode than a team game. Unreal Tournament is also like this. It entirely depends on the game, 1v1s in CoD games aren't great, but they can still work on certain maps. It's mainly because you die too fast in those games. In Quake or UT you have enough stack of health/armour to survive a lot of shots, which makes engagements last more than 0.5 seconds, and the smaller maps make engagements happen more often. All this makes for an entertaining 1v1.
You can do TF2 1v1 in MGE Mod.

James is a pretty good suggestion actually and I think there's plenty of people here that can get a hold of him (steam and what not).

Hope they're all trekkies. I've played this randomly at a LAN party where most people were, but only myself and another dude knew how to play it decently. But we didn't know that, so the teams were heavily stacked in Borg favor.
