Smarter enemies, bigger guns...

Borderlands was the sleeper hit of 2009, but faced some criticism for its disjointed missions and story.

Happily, Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Birch revealed in a recent interview that it's been addressed for the sequel.
"We focused on telling a cohesive story that is actually in line with mission objectives, not just relegated to text notes at the beginning and ends of missions," he says.
This is great for Borderlands 2, but the new stuff doesn't stop there - the cel-shaded shooter also gets even more weapon varieties on top of the millions of combos from the original.
"We took our 87 bazillion guns and made them even more diverse in terms of the way they look," says Birch. "You can see all the parts made by different manufacturers - they all fire differently. You have the Vladof minigun that is a slow spin up and then gets really fast.

"We have the TDR that you throw and reload and it turns into a grenade. We took all the existing systems and made them even better." That's a bold claim given the already high standards of Borderlands, but it's backed up by what we've seen of 2.
The enemy AI is much improved - creatures such as the Arctic Bullymong rip up anything around them with their gorilla-like arms to create makeshift weapons. We watched one throw a car, then leap up the side of a mountain to avoid gunfire. Impressive, and very threatening. Looks like you're going to need all those new guns after all.

Borderlands was quite good.
Guess I got to get in and finish the last two expansions.

One thing I didn't like were the ever abundant loading screens at all those gates connecting the maps.
It's either a problem of the Unreal engine or because of low-memory consolitis.
If it's the latter, I really hope they adjust the game for PC, with larger, continuous maps, so that the immersion of a huge, open world doesn't get destroyed.

The other is the utterly stupid controls of the vehicles.
I really have no clue why they didn't simply use WASD for steering/accelerating/braking and the mouse for looking around and firing.
Instead, they used some strange mix of those two, which was utterly awkward.
And consoles are not an excuse here, because steering works very well with two analog sticks and doesn't need such a weird scheme.
I really hope they change that, or at least make it customizable.

Still haven't had time to play the first one. Worth it?

If you can get a few friends to run through the game with you then yea. I played sniper class on a solo playthrough, not hard but very boring. Played coop on the second playthrough with the Siren class(super fun), Knoxxs Armory is a good DLC for the money. The rest were fairly meh imo.

truth

edit:  There was so much hype about the number and variety of weapons but it seemed to me that 90% are useless and the really cool ones rarely drop. /shrugs

Definitively yes, it's Diablo with guns.  LOTS of guns.

I like the soundtrack on the first one better. Although claptrap saying wub wub wub is funny I guess.

Looking forward to this game! As in, can't wait for it to go on Steam sale with all the DLC! Probably not gonna get it right away, but it was well worth it for $7.50.

I can safely say I cannot wait for this game. OPF:DR came out when this came out, I wasted my money on DR instead. A day later I realized my folly and bought Borderlands, i was hesitant but it proved to be so much fun to play.

This will definitely be on my wishlist.

If a hard last boss is your thing, I'd wait. The first one kind of disappointed in that regard.

Liked the first, but sincerly hope they fix the netcode issues. Lag meant that sniper players pretty much had to host the game. And if it comes with gamespy again I might actually cut someone.

1. Buy a video game.
2. Buy DLC for a proper ending.
3. ...
4. Profit!

It's very loot driven, there's really no plot whatsoever and I guess it gets repetitive for some but the new guns just keep on coming and that makes it last forever.  It's a dangling carrot kind of thing, like BF3/CoD unlock system but with less bullshit.

I wouldn't pay full price for a Borderlands game, but @$15-20 or less it is probably worth it. (i.e. - get it on a Steam sale)

Nah, it only has the endless amounts of random weapon and loot drops from Diablo. And some RPG levelling stuff with perks and such.
The rest is a sci-fi, FPS game similar to Serious Sam with hoards of enemies.

Not all of us can play Diablo. Some of us need to copulate with women and carry on the human species.

Except a much smaller horde than serious sam.

So they're basically saying that they're making it a proper PC game. Still won't help if the last boss is a pushover.
