I started reading the books ten years ago and it's honestly the best fantasy I've read besides Tolkien. This whole 'I won't read it' while judging it superficially from its tv representation... well, your life, your loss.

the reason i won't read it is because i don't have time to read fantasy alongside everything else, nor any inclination. i'm sure it's good fantasy. but i'm discussing the book-itself and the phenomenon as two entirely different things. the mongs i'm talking about buy the books because of the buzz and phenomenon - not because they are ardent fantasy fans, have read lots of the genre, and can tell a critical gem from an absolute stinker. they read it because other people on the train read it. fashion and literature shouldn't really mix, and series like this have - lately - become oddly 'fashionable'. good for you if you like fantasy. personally i could never devote much time to reading fantasy knowing how it compares to what else is out there.

i read the about 2.5 books of the three-book LOTR series when i was still fairly young (maybe around 12 or so). i read book one of the ASOIAF series last year and am 1/3 through the 2nd book now. maybe it's because i was so young when i read LOTR, but i enjoy ASOIAF a lot more

The Silmarillion was my favorite Tolkien book. Elves, creation of the world, gods etc

@tucker's karma: yeah, it's because it's ostentatious. i hate doing it too. the other week i saw some dude reading dickens on the tube... stood up, holding the book up and out in the most showy way. congratulations fella, you're reading dickens. on public transport. whilst stood up. like a ponce. books as fashion accessories is an offensive concept to me. i turned and joked to my girlfriend that one day i was going to load up like, one of those executive wheeled-carry briefcase things with all 7 volumes of a la recherche du temps perdu in hardback... and just sit on the tube, reading them all day. she laughed, cause she's also an english lit student and can appreciate a FINE CULTURED PERSON'S HUMOUR.

you should read it, it takes the world-building element of fantasy to pretty critical apogee.

that's whole i feel... regarding everything that isn't fantasy. 1000 pages about elf titties and magic swords just doesn't seem worth it when the world's greatest literature waits out there, unread.

Shrug, fantasy is as valid a delivery device for ideas as any other genre. There's a lot of terrible, terrible fantasy out there, but it's the same in any genre that has fanboys. There are tens of thousands of shitty authors for every Agatha Christie. There are tens of thousands of shitty authors for every Asimov or Heinlein. There are ten thousand books written by Stephen King and Tom Clancy.

It's entertainment. I can't say I got any less from reading Martin than from reading Vonnegut or Heller.

Martin does do some stupid things with his writing though. More than once he has mentioned a ships gunwale. You know, implying a ship has guns.

Yet in the SoIaF universe there's been no mention of gunpowder or invention of projectile weapons other than crossbows and catapults.

So annoying.

Read one book by Camus.
(probably L’Étranger or L'Homme révolté, depending on whether you prefer fiction or essay)

Now, having read that one book, does Camus really have much more to say?

Do you really need to read the rest of his works?
No.. you read it because you enjoy the way he writes, the way he makes a point, the perspective of his observation.
It entertains you.

Some people like elf titties.
Other people like hot dragon-mama titties (Dany from Game of Thrones TV series).
You, Uzique, seem to profess a preference for 32DD titties as worn by literature students.

i would also argue that my choice is far better and has far more real world use than any of the two alternatives

i would definitely not say that all of camus' work can be contained in one statement. one fictional statement provides a brief overview, maybe. l'etranger is a great expression of his thought in fiction, sure. not his best in my opinion, but a great piece of classic literature. would i say that from reading l'etranger you have understood the thought in 'the myth of sisyphus'? no, absolutely not. that's like saying by reading one of kant's critiques you have understood them all. not so. classic literature - including separate books by the same author - enjoy shared positions in the canon because they each and all contribute something. with fantasy it is so regurgitated and so derivative, it's almost insulting to say that people only read more than one camus novel for the same reason.

I'm going by memory, from 15 years ago.
Also, I'm most definitely NOT an arts & literature major.

The point is, we're shitting all over the Game of Thrones thread - You're insulting the people that are entertained by it, for really no good reason.

i've already said i'm sure it's great fantasy reading. i would hope that somebody that comes to an internet forum to discuss a fantasy book is more of a fan than the people my disparaging comments are targeted at, those that pick up a book because it's a social craze.

I'm really disappointed they basically jumped through the Arya-Gendry-Hot Pie-Lommy storyline. It made that battle all the more important. If you've never read the books you basically have no idea who Hot Pie even is. It's unfortunate but when it's only a 10 episode season what can you do?

I really hope they make Season 3 13-15 episodes. They're gonna need it.

That was the part where I threw the book across the room!
