Both BF3 and D3 are both lacking TBH.

BF1942 gets more players than BF2 now, or at least it did have a few days ago. Its a pity, because apart from the stats system & unlocks BF2 was actually pretty good.

I liked 1942 and vn primarily because the artillery was player-controlled. Liked vn less because of its lack of big ships. Liked 2 more because of the commander/squad layout and the shiny new stat system. I still play 1942 now and then and have never failed to find servers that still run it.
