Yeah, Oxford already on the list.  I have a nephew in-law attending Oxford.  Mega silver spoon upbringing, but humble through and through.

UMD is 117 overall, 132 in management. Could be better, could be worse, fuck it lol

you follow those things year on year? they're meaningless. the difference in the top25/50 is pretty much nil. the entire top100 are in the top 1%.

after that the yearly changes are pretty much just for PR/prospectus brags, and that's it.

oxbridge overtake one another every other year in those rankings. it's dumb. i went with oxford in the end because it's marginally stronger for humanities, and cambridge is probably marginally better for sciences. the effective difference, though? in the real-world workplace: absolutely nil. in academia? still pretty much nil. if you go to a top-tier uni you can move wherever is best for your needs afterwards in your career. in fact i'd go as far as to say that certain world-class english departments in the uk, which don't even grace the world top250, are looked upon more favourably by the 'superunis' (i.e. world top10) than other large unis in the top100, e.g. durham, york, exeter, roho, qmul, bath, uea, etc.

tl;dr: these rankings aren't news to anyone except those in the business of endlessly compiling them.

also lol at considering 'mba uni'. mba's aren't worth two shits in the academic world. sure if it impresses your business colleagues...

Have a friend attending Cambridge.  She absolutely fucking hates it.  Well, hates the people and the area.  She's studying under her mentor so the course work is enjoyable i guess.

oxbridge terms are about as intense as anything you'll ever experience, academically. they are short, intensive, and require 60-70 hours a week for a bright and top-level student to really keep up. add to the fact that oxford and cambridge are both pretty quiet and provincial towns and you have an academic pressure cooker. not surprised an american doesn't like the atmosphere. most people's tact is to bunker down, clear the term as best as they can, and then leave during non-term time to blow off steam. i guess foreign students can't do that. oh and everyone studies very closely under a supervisor - it's one of the perqs of going there.

yeah well that's expected.  She's getting her Phd in molecular biology or something, can't quite remember the specifics.  I just know she's doing a lot of AIDS research and that's her focus.  She doesn't like the people because they're fucking uptight, which I guess is to be expected.  She smokes a copious amount of pot and she said people there look at her like she's a leper when she tries to find some.

Computer's up and running again. Hard drive crapped itself so had to buy a new one. A lot of stuff lost, hopefully none of it anything I'll miss.

Last time I fired up the hard drive I heard clicking, grinding and even beeping. I'm pretty sure it's royally fucked.
