I find that the best commanders are those who arent fighting in the field. I agree a commander should do their part to save their own skin & stop base rapers, sabotouers & Vehicle thieves but using the APC that a member of the team could use to capture vital control points or pin down enemy infantry is a big sacrifice in order for the commander to get a few kills in a round. Since the base can be easily defended with traps or simply assigning a small squad to its deffence (If its under attack frequently). A commanders focus should be on the complete picture, not his private corner of the war.

I love sitting in a veh. while MEC commander at southern sharqi heli pad looking at scan and seeing an enemy veh. approaching after artillery was destroyed. Naturally I use the engineer kit, so I lay AT mines at the north road entrance and either they hit the mines or get out of the veh. walk around headed for the scan or UAV trailer only to get hit by my Vodnik hahahaha

It all depends on the situation and the map.Sometimes it is necessary for you to have to fight to pick up the slack. If you got at least 3 good squads it shouldn't be necessary fo you to fight.Defense of your assets or a vital spawn point should be the only reason to have to fight. You have to pay attention to the command screen and give your squads support even when the don't ask for it and need it,or you can just be an asshat commanding while baserape bombing,Whatever.

I finally got to try commanding for a 1.5 hours today (various maps but same teams/commanders) and I tried the "laying there thing", but that didnt last long. First the other commander scanned me and kept dropping artillery on me. So I started moving around. Then he realized I was a newbie at it and got brazen - he started personally tracking me down and trying to shoot me! He was pretty good as it forced me to only command for brief moments in between running and hiding. (That dreaded UAV/scan!)

I got back at him a couple of times by blowing up some of his assets and in the end it came down to a one-on-one where I was the last one standing and he shot me, but the artillery I called right before that caught his ass. It was a rather intense first session for a commander.

So....Im not sure if that scenario was an isolated situation, or not. In general, however, I think the primary concern as a commander would be to protect your life, command the troops, and protect your assets when possible.

Virtual-

Traditionally, I gotta admit, it's rare for commanders to go mano-a-mano in my experience.  Sounds like fun, though- imagine if you'd been able to kill the opposing commander, though- that would have been good for a laugh.  especially because you could have artied his base and taken the fight to him....or just, y'know, win the round.  one of the two.

Well thats debatable. I have had commanders that are fighting and I would be in a tank or APC and be on low ammor. And I would call for supplies and it takes forever for him to send it. So as long as they keep up with the requests I have no prob. with it.
