I have a 3.0 GHz PC w/ ATI Radeon X850 XT PE.  It has been running fine for months.  I came home yesterday to play a bit and had a tremendously long wait to connect to EA Account server.  Once in I logged in to the same server I always play and the video was choppy.  My ping was like 45, but  I do not know the FPS (do not know how to check).

All I know is that whatever server I connect to I get slightly choppy video.  Really hurts game play.  This all happened BEFORE   I installed the 1.3 patch.

I hoped all that stuff was a function of everyone switching over to the new patch.  I installed the patch this morning and still got the same thing.  I then went in to try reducing video settings. Same thing.

This happened once before and just cleared up on it's own in a couple days.

Anyone know the source or how to fix it??  Is it a function of everyone tying up the EA servers downloading the patch?  I had a download speed of about 12 Mb/s and could not do any better.

Are you sure about the before 1.3 bit?

I had the same problem after installing the 1.3 patch.
It turns out the patch resets all your vid settings to high (has been doing that with every bf2patch btw). So you need to reconfigure your vidsettings to the optimal settings you had before... If that is not your problem... sorry I could not help.

It doesn't do that. I had the choppy gameplay after 1.3 too. Not after 1.2 though. I set ALL my settings to LOW (before it used to be medium) and i still get my HD going crazy becuase all of a sudden i don't have enough RAM. Before it was smooth. BF2 isn't playable anymore. Plus it keeps CTD every round or so.

Who gives a shit about squad hopping/vehicle dropping/whatever, i just want patches that actually allow me to increase some video settings and fix bugs and the like, this patch has done the opposite. This one round i couldn't even pick the claymore, i kept switching to it, but it kept glitching and going back to the rifle...so yeah. Just overall messed up. Not gameplay-wise (well actually i dunno becuase i can't really play a decent round), but performance-wise.

Same problem here mate...and several other ATI owner experience this.

Although I had that problem since v1.22.

This game is rather optimized for nVidia.

Edit: By the way, you can check your FPS rate by:

- Open up console in-game

- Type: "renderer.drawFPS 1" without quote marks

- Press enter and close console

- Your current FPS will appear at the upper-right corner of your screen...great position...you barely see it from the texts:)

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the ideas.  Let me try to answer all the different questions-

- Choppy B4 patch??- YES.  For sure.

- Video settings- I have not changed a thing since installing this video card 1 month ago.  All on high with 2x AA.  Has run fine like this all month.  I tried turning off AA and had no effect.

- HD and Ram-  Did not notice anything changing with the HD function, but will check again.

- Programs running in background- Sure, but nothing more than what I have been running for a long time.  I had memory problems when I first started playing with 1 GB ram.  Once I upgraded tp 3GB I had no more issues.  I am still not happy with map load times, but runs fine.

- nVidia vs ATI-  Don't think this is the issue either.  Like I said I had this happen once before and it is when I was running a NVidia card.

I will start with video settings very low and see what happens.  This had no effect last time, but who says it is the same thing as before?

I am out of town, so I will not be able to try anything more until tomorrow night.

I got a similar problem. Used to have a Radeon 9700 pro (128mb), 3.1Ghz processor, 1Gb RAM and i was getting a good framerate. But that gfx card broke for some reason so i bought a Radeon x1300 (512mb) and now its really choppy, same settings as before but worse framerate on a better card... WTF???

Anyone reckon MOBO? coz its an AGP 8x card running on a 4x mobo...

Also...12MB/s download speed? jeez man what speed u on? and who's the ISP?

Although graphics are fine for me - i'm using nvidia - I also now have an incredibly long wait to log in...

OK go to BF2 in my documents  and delete ALL your folders EXCEPT for your PROFILES (thats your control settings)!  <-----Because they may be corrupt!

Run Adaware and spy-bot!  to get rid of any unknown spyware!

and set your video settings according to tweakguides.com!  It helps your PC run smoothly while Looking Good!

and good luck!

let me know if this helps guys, I had the sam problem!

Yeah, really slow, but only downloading this file.  Normally download at 6 Mb/s.

Hey for those of you who have to wait an incredibly long amount of time to login, the easiest solution...
Delete your account, then retreive it.

It'll get rid of your personal settings and such but speeds up the login time.

I had the same problem. Reinstalled my Ati vid drivers (albeit with the XG ones mentioned on this foum) & runs better than ever

i'm sure this isn't it but i recently upgraded to a new vid card and my FPS was better but nothing huge. it should have been but even at lower settings it was running the same. as a last resort i defragged my HDs. even though my system and game drive were less than 4% fragmented. after that my FPS jumped tremendously and now i play with everything on high and 6xAA.

not sure if this will help your situation, but when I was using an ATI, I found these settings : http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?pid=178665#p178665 were the best.

Make sure you have the latest catalyst (6.2?) drivers as well - they do make a difference.

Good luck... no one should have to play on low settings.. thats just crazy.

Well, well, well.  I was gone all week.  When I came home I thought I would try it just to see if something has changed.  Everything was fine.  Go figure.

Thanks for all the help.  I guess I may never know what cause this...

OK so it started again this morning.  I reset my router and defragged the HD.  Seems to be working good.  Wish I knew which one fixed it.
