Hmm indeed we did, I was still lost in the felix trade.

Saunders' contract will be, what, 5 years/50 cents a year? We have no money left.

Seattle can always sponge off the rest of the state.

Sports teams in general are sponging off the American public as a whole anyway. Between taxpayer funded stadiums, and forced inclusion of sports channels in cable packages, we're all footing the bill whether we want to or not. The fact that every cable subscriber in the country is forced to pay $5/mo to ESPN (let alone all the regional sports networks and other crap we pay for) is what is driving salaries like what Felix Hernandez got today. Whole thing pisses me off. Bring on a la cart cable!

It would be nice initially yes, but theyd (cable companies) go bankrupt if they sold channel by channel. so would all of those channels that only a few people watch. in 5 years there'd only be like 10 total channels in the world and theyd all compete for airtime with SO many shitty shows that pander to masses instead of quality. it would be absolute anarchy

okay so my slope was extra slippery on this one but still...

It wouldn't be the cable companies, it would be the content providers. How can Disney force Comcast to carry their whole suite of channels if people only want ESPN?

A la carte programming would probably mean we pay higher prices for cable too. Providers would have to recoup lost revenue. Instead of charging cable companies $5 per home for 20 million homes for ESPN, they'd have to charge $25 per home for the 4 million homes that actually watch and want ESPN. The current climate is the best compromise for everyone.

Maybe I don't watch honey boo boo or whatever that show is called, but I like the option.

Well what about someone like myself who watches close to 0 TV but on occasion I'll tune into SportsCenter? Instead of paying $90/month for a crap-load of TV I don't watch. I"d pay $25 for the one station I do watch.

Look at the case of BBC. They tried to release an on demand channel available online. They tried to offer it at $199/year I think. The MSOs (aka cable cartel) essentially told them if the BBC did that, they (MSOs) would drop their suite of channels from their service. Risk 30 million homes for an unsure number of online subscriptions? Doesn't seem to make sense. Plus MSO and cable providers promote and advertise the channels, which means content providers like ESPN and HBO and BBC don't need to spend as much.

Oh by no means am I saying my idea is right. I'm just mentioning that not everyone would lose out in an a la carte cable menu. It's a loss of money for the great majority but there are some who would benefit.

And indeed you're correct that it will not happen any time soon.

There'd be like four of us in the league.

On a similar note, received my annual league invite today which means baseball is officially here and I will now dump at least 20 hours into a spreadsheet before draft day!

I can't do MLB fantasy. It takes so much more effort than NFL that I just don't have. I did one year and it was fun but it was constant and daily without breaks. I like having a day or three off to not worry about changing my lineup between games.

I stopped playing fantasy football because I always forgot to do waiver moves and set my lineup. Baseball keeps me engaged via habit. Takes like ten mins a day.

I guess you forget with NFL because it's too infrequent and I forget with MLB because it's every day. Oh well.

Mariners are laying waste to spring ball. And as well all know, the cactus league equates perfectly to what the real season will turn out like.

Our offense is killing it which has been or crutch since basically 2001 (and even then we just played small ball. Base hit after base hit after base hit).
