Yes different from stateside but I'm trying to understand where getting just a little over half the answers correct is acceptable.

It was cakewalk for me getting on the Dean's list.
You never had a professor that would absolutely mindfuck every student in the classroom with a two hour test that could only be adequately completed in four hours unless the student was an absolute expert? I had a lot of those, which led to a lot of curves.

Yeah, we receive bronze wine training to start with, then silver training in about 6 months, then gold training in around 18 months. After that we can get our WSET certs I, II and III, which are internationally accredited and recognised - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%26_S … tion_Trust

tbh I could probably pass cert I right now. I've heard III is quite difficult as part of it is blind tasting to correctly recognise varietals.

I think in terms of regionality it could be quite difficult. For example, a Margaret River Chardonnay or Semillon (I forget which) tastes very similar to a NZ Sauvignon Blanc. So if a customer was to say they don't like NZ SB but love white definitely don't offer a Margaret River chardy/semi

I don't mean this offensively, but what does a wine taster do that contributes to society, or where do you get... Placed?

I really just don't know, so don't think that I think your job is pointless or anything.

what job did you just get again? what are your qualifications? what stakes your inherent worth?

he tastes wine and educates himself on wine so that he can advise (and most importantly, SELL) wine to people who want wine. it's basic knowledge economy. do you understand that? people specialize in certain things... other people without the time/inclination to be that specialised, however, would like a good drink... they pay a man to advise them, or they go to a store/business with lots of experience (such as the one he works for), who then recommends them a suitable product. everyone leaves happy.

it's basic capitalism. "wine tester" and "wine salesman" is no different in core skillset from "car salesman". you're just memorizing different jargon and selling-points. his bullshit 'terroir' is a car salesman's "fuel-injection kit". he's essentially learning a bunch of wine-tasting neologisms/technical terms in order to be able to converse fluently in the professional parlance of his trade.

this is not difficult.

Is there a demand for wine? Yes.
So there would be a demand for people who know about it.
