I think the number of "units" matter more. I'm my uni having 24 units (6 per course usually) is the standard "full time" work load, but 18 (which is what i'm doing) is the bare minimum to qualify as a full time student. If you want to take on 30 units a semester you have to apply to overload your coursework and not that many people can pull it off at my uni.

the number of courses doesn't mean anything. it's arbitrary. one course could be a 'major' course of a huge topic. you could be taking 6-7 courses in rather small, specialized niches. or hell, even 2-3 of those courses could be complimentary, or inter-related. and that goes for any subject. the number of courses/modules/topics the structure is broken up into really means shit. you take pride in total whimsy.
Well, it's the root of the humanities/engineering debates we have all the time. Engineers would sit in the classroom for 24+ hours per week and be expected to do an additional 6-7 hours of homework per week per class while the humanities and business majors played video games in their room until the day before they had a paper due, then it was whining about all the work they had to do and how stressed they were. That's where the animus stems from.

If I had taken 3-4 classes per semester it would've taken me six years to graduate.

Maybe at your school. Remember every school is completely different. I know science majors and engineering kids get at least double the contact hours due to lab work.

We call them credits and work in units of 3 typically. Full time is 12 credits (4 standard classes). If you want to graduate in in four years though you will need to take at least 15 credits. 120 in needed to graduate. For undergrads.

They really should make potential teachers take personality tests before they allow them to enter the field. Need to screen out sociopaths and the like.

doesn't really sound like a 'debate'. sounds like you representing the science side of things to be utter toil, and then dismissing humanities majors experience out of hand. let's not get into it again. "sit around playing video-games". okay. let's not forget that most people here on this video-game forum are STEM majors/graduates. you are a clown. i spent 40+ hours a week reading, studying, writing. you relegating my efforts just because i wasn't required to sit in a classroom to do that work is fucking inane. maybe that's where YOUR "animus" stems from. the fact you went to a shit school with a shit humanities faculty. don't talk for everyone, thanks.

also, again, the number of classes DO NOT MATTER. every university has a different course structure and way of time-tabling/dividing up the course of instruction. your '3-4 class' rota is pretty specific to your institution.

it's always kind of absurd how jay continually makes everything about his education into a pissing contest. "most credits". "most contact hours". "most courses per semester". "most effort, of course". but then he went to the lowest-regarded, easiest-entry school of any member here. i don't know why he even bothers in these pissing matches.

jay your college doesn't even offer humanities or arts degrees. so what the fuck are you talking about "your experience" for? this "debate"? a convenient fiction. the only non-science courses offered at your alma mater are business and tourism. great fucking comparison man.

Actually, my school is very well regarded, it's just small so you've never heard of it.

And yes, I am very proud of the effort I put in. I graduated with honors while completing 159 credits in three years. It took a shit load of effort on my part. And yes, my school did have a second rate humanities department but that had everything to do with the fact that the only degrees offered were in engineering, naval architecture, business, marine bio and meteorology. Very specialized school, and they're good at what they do.

I really don't understand where you get tourism from. There wasn't a single major on campus that had anything at all to do with tourism. Maybe some grads work for Carnival or Norwegian or something as ships officers... I dunno.

right so you're determined to deride and degrade humanities students efforts, despite the fact you've never encountered one in your university experience. sounds very reasonable to me. and it's also pretty funny you'll now stick up for your shittily ranked school because it's "small and no one's ever heard of it". didn't you just say a week ago that "nobody has ever heard of your college here in america uzi". as an insult? cause that's pretty funny.

your school has a 70% acceptance rate (with a 3.0GPA, wow). it is largely vocational/applied in its focus. why are you continually trying to one-up people who went to extremely selective, academic institutions?

Yes, I did use it as an insult, because you care tremendously what people think of your education. You've gone on and on and on over the years about how highly your school ranks etc. No one has heard of it here. No one cares about whatever prestige you try to attach to your education. It doesn't impress anyone.

i think you may like to read back over the last 2 pages of this thread dude. every single post you made was just trying to one-up someone, or make your effort look more tremendous. you can't even invoke the 'science and humanities' thing without feeling the need to portray all those humanities students "playing video-games" whilst you worked your ass off in college (all those non-existent humanities students at your college that doesn't have a humanities faculty-- and let's not forget you played warcraft yourself, admittedly, hardcore...). you reek of trying to one-up people in a very futile and misguided way. as for 'international outreach', you mong, my alma mater is ranked #1 in the country right now for international reach. #1. and it grants a degree from the federal uni of london. that's in the top5 of all UK degrees recognized worldwide. i really don't know why you go for these asinine angles of attack. perhaps you haven't heard of my college. that's okay. i doubt you've even heard of most of the highly-ranked colleges in your own state. i doubt most people have. it's not exactly that interesting. your ignorance doesn't empirically relegate an institution. stop trying to dick on everyone with your credits/contact hours crap. the statistics speak for themselves.

that doesn't really sound like the way an excellent school operates to me. high drop-out rates are considered 'very bad' here in the UK. most universities will do everything they can to keep their retention rates high. high drop-out rates translates to either a failure in the admissions process, a failure in teaching/instruction, or generally a poor estimation of the university as a 'supplier' of education or a service (basically: customer dissatisfaction). no self-respecting institution has a shit admissions process and then 'prides' itself on its high drop-out rate. the ivy league have 5-15% acceptance rate for a reason.

It had to do with the fact that most of the student body had to deal with a military style environment where they had to wear a uniform to class, go to formations, run to class as freshmen etc. Anyone that wanted their deck or engine license in order to ship out on commercial vessels had to deal with it. A lot of people can't handle it, and a lot of people can't handle engineering programs so there's a higher turnover than at other schools. Graduates are well regarded because they've shown they can put up with an enormous amount of bullshit and survive, not because they are MIT level geniuses

Yes we remember you dropped out of community college before you joined the military. Don't act like you are well traveled or something.
