Part of my training today for my new job was to read the employee handbook on the company portal.
Got a bunch of cool little benefits like getting a full paid day off for any reasonable amount of jury duty days instead of just the little $14 pittance the court gives you for showing up, and I get 3 days of paid bereavement leave if anybody closely related dies in addition to the prorated 7 days of vacation and 4 sick days I already get for my first year. Also get a 401K automatically after the first month with options for health, dental care and all that other good stuff. Real jobs and their benefits are fucking awesome.
They also say in so many words that they respect everybody's privacy and as long as you have your shit together when you come to work, they don't really care what you do in your private life. Must be why they didn't piss test. This is the way things should be ran

i'm pretty sure students are encouraged to work together and share ideas. the exchange of ideas and discussion is kind of a vital point to seminars and study-groups, you know. so long as she didn't plagiarize anything, she hasn't done anything wrong. me giving her some reading list recommendations and other contextual bits and bots, and doing the usual grammar/syntax/phrasing editing, is hardly "not doing her own work". she did all the reading for herself and reformulated it to her topic. i just gave her encouragement and guided her/made her aware of certain thinkers/texts that she may not have encountered before. hardly me writing her dissertation. i've got enough work to do.
such a cheery fellow, dilbert! i think you fundamentally miss the difference between science and humanities studies. a major method of learning and acquiring new ideas in humanities is group seminar discussion and mutual criticism. i guess there isn't really room for that in a science exam, where there's only a right/wrong answer, and the individual must show their workings. in humanities, so long as you reference/cite every thinker who you lean on for sources, you are effectively 'showing your working'. of course you won't get a high mark (like a first) if all your work does is recycle what other people said, with nothing to contribute or forward yourself...

dissertations for undergraduate work are normally anywhere between 7,500-15,000 words.
mine was on the aesthetic influence and heritage of british philosophy in marcel proust's masterpiece, a la recherche du temps perdu.
my girlfriend's was conducting an aesthetic/technological study of the twin-histories of photography and the short-story form, tracing their inter-relation and development in the late 19th century.
yes, all degrees over here that graduate with 'honours', e.g. a BA (Hons), or BSc (Hons) means you graduated with a thesis/dissertation component. typically all students who perform well in their first two/three years of undergraduate study are encouraged to take up a self-directed dissertation during their finalist year. it's completely self-directed and the student must submit their own proposal to be accepted by a supervisor. mostly people averaging above a 2:1 (the standard 'above average' pass; 3.3-3.7 GPA) will be offered the chance to do a thesis. people below the 2:1 classification or 3.3GPA will just do another ordinary 'large' module/course or two that is structured and taught normally for the duration of a term/year. the 'strong' candidates spend that portion of the timetable for the term/year doing their dissertation, on their own.you have to write a thesis for your undergraduate studies?

I'm rather glad I didn't have to do that, but kind of also wish I did as an intellectual challenge. The longest paper I ever wrote was a term paper for my history class that barely pushed 3,500 words (I also procrastinated the balls out of doing it, too, so that could have improved).
