Nicaragua has awarded a Chinese company a 100-year concession to build an alternative to the Panama Canal, in a step that looks set to have profound geopolitical ramifications.
The president of the country's national assembly, Rene Nuñez, announced the $40bn (£26bn) project, which will reinforce Beijing's growing influence on global trade and weaken US dominance over the key shipping route between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
hmmm... how's the situation with democracy and human rights in nicaragua? what about gays - aren't they being discriminated against? surely there's something for which it would be okay to bomb the crap out of the horrible government in there and return control of the nation to its proud brown people!

It IS a pretty terrible country with horrific poverty, a massively corrupt government, and a near-term history of civil war and revolution. I fail to see how it weakens the US at all though. Seems like a pretty silly project to take on when the Panama Canal is currently undergoing massive renovations and will soon allow much larger vessels to pass. The Chinese should probably worry more about their ghost cities and fake GDP gains.
