haha yeah i'm glad i never took it to that extreme.  Plus I just got back from India a few months ago, and I spent one week there and have little desire to go back.  I'm down for developing countries and all, but seeing all the poverty and crowdedness and dirty smelly living was a little too much.  Granted I was in Mumbai and New Delhi which are crowded as fuck, but it really turned me off.  Cool sights, cool people, but I'd rather not smell vicious body odor every where I go.

I don't think you comprehended correctly.  Maybe you scanned the couple of sentences for a few buzz words then came out with that TLDR, or maybe you just wanted to make some pop culture reference? I wasn't self pitying when I was looking into buddhism - I was seeking something different from the religion that was forced upon me for the first 16 years of my life.  buddhism and eastern religious thought in general was a good segue to the atheism final form i ended up taking, and i think it's a natural path to go down when you're coming of age and trying to figure out what life means (or if there is any meaning, for that matter).  When I mentioned vices it had more to do with substance abuse in general and living a pretty wild life as opposed to feeling pity because i can't come to terms with my materialism.

but cool reference I guess?  I thought Mad Men was a terrible show personally.

Jay, you're a dumbo who boils everyone down to the neighborhood they are in, where they are from, the color of their skin or what clothes they wear.  It reeks of serious insecurity problems.  I'm sure you'll try to pretend it's all some joke but virtually all your commenting reflects this so maybe you should just take off your white wig and put down the gavel, Judge Judy.
Well, it's because people generally fall into certain categories. Sure, everyone is moderately different, but the unique snowflake thing is mostly bull. People find a culture and conform to it and it becomes their identity. It's not always permanent.

You being a lefty kid from orange county seeking out eastern religions and feeling like a corporate sellout is normal. There are about a thousand punk songs originating in your county with the same story.

Any songs from where you grew up talking about lost souls who work for and then go to school on the government dime then talk about how everyone should rely on the FREEEEE market or pull themselves up by the bootstraps instead of taking government handouts? I mean, it's the upstate new york way, right?

So you're an overweight dole chaser-cum-hypocrite...there's a few interesting categories you pigeonhole into nicely.

I have to say, this whole 'being dumber than bricks' thing is kind of fun.

Bad Religion is from HelLA.  YOu could have used Offspring, Social Distortion, Adolescents, TSOL, the Vandals, etc.

I don't get upset at people calling me names or trying to make fun of me. I get upset at people being stupid.

I first listened to Bad Religion back when I was 14 in 2004. Haven't listened to them since New Maps of Hell. They are okay but remind me of high school and have an angsty sound. Like listening to Korn or System of a Down in 2015, it just doesn't age well when you age. Cool to listen to for nostalgia or when you or bored but not much beyond that. NJ ska and hardcore was big growing up.

Something from NJ from your generation, jay.

You mean like identifying as a self-reliant libertarian while having signed up for the biggest tax-and-spend social program the world has ever seen - the US Military?

BTW, this is the book thread, not the neck-beard thrash-metal thread.

Not really sure why you all think this is the winning argument against me. Repeating it three times doesn't make it any more true.

And it's punk, not metal, grandpa.

every nation has a state-funded stimulus or form of welfare. a central industry that is planned and based around a marriage of industry/big business and government. something too big to fail that carries the economic growth and continued employment of the proletariat. in soviet Russia it was steel and electricity – the foundries of the future. in capitalist pig America, it has always been the military. your society's prospering has been predicated on war. you  were sucked into an industrial process as old as mushet steel, and yet you call yourself a self-made man.

We spend 3.8% of GDP on our military. Too high? Sure. Obscene? Not really. Your own country spends 2.2%.

I'm not an anarchist. I don't believe it's unethical or immoral  to work in the public sector. I believe in a minimalist government, not no government, and serving in the military for the public defense is perfectly reasonable. I joined the military when Clinton was still president and expected to serve in a defensive capacity, not take part in a war of aggression in Iraq. C'est la vie.

We've always had war hawks in this country, I think every country does, but prior to world war 2 they were held in check by our national aversion to large standing militaries (courtesy of you). I would love to have a small defense oriented military that depends more on reservists than active duty members. Unfortunately, defense contractors are big political donors and the hawks effectively use fear to get their way. As for the jobs program argument, military leaders and Congress share Wellington's view that enlisted people are the scum of the earth, so believing that they spared a single thought about the health and welfare of people at the bottom of society is rather comical.

it's not about total GDP spending on the military. there's a lot of economic growth and profit to be made from war in the private sector. and, historically, the military track has been a fantastic way to introduce socialism through the backdoor. poor kids with no hopes can tell themselves they're living the 'American Dream' and bettering themselves by submitting to one of the biggest workfare schemes since hitler built the ubahns.

admit it, you'd be nowhere without your Uncle Sam. aunt rand doesn't mind really. she was a healthcare loving hypocrite too.

I disagree. Spending a million dollars on a missile and then launching it into the desert is entirely destructive. Nothing real is produced. It's akin to paying people to dig ditches all day and then filling them in at the end of their shift.

I wouldn't be nowhere without Uncle Sam. I'd have college loan debt like everyone else in my generation, but so what? The mortgage on my house dwarfs whatever loans I'd have and I'll be paying that thing off until I'm nearly dead. No one "needs" the military. We don't have people dying in the gutters of starvation. This isn't 18th century London.
