I knew you were going to bitch. Yeah, I am sure those places have great indigenous authors and stuff but I rarely see anything from there get major attention like Japanese or Korean stuff. I was talking completely beyond books too. Russia makes great weapons but they really aren't creating any advances in consumer goods. No one is looking to buy the latest Russian gadget or car. When was the last time one of their movies had a use adaptation made of it? I am sure Iranians make good movies by Iranian standards but the best movies coming out of the middle east right now are from ISIS. Oh and African literature is so great it started once the Europeans left and they learnt to read. All very impressive.
you have a pitiable understanding of how the market of international authors works. what's your idea of good japanese literature? murakami? lol. i hope you realise that in his native country people think he is simple and adolescent. but he's this 'great' herald of authentic east asian culture to western readers who think they are being soooo sophisticated reading a japanese guy murder 1930's existentialism in turgid prose. just because these things are outside your sphere of cultural awareness, doesn't mean they exist. stop being such a provincial little american.
and are you talking about cultures producing great art, or the cultural influence of the USA on the world stage? no shit hollywood commands the film industry (bollywood is also huge by volume and gross earnings but doesn't have the same export appeal, granted). i'm confused by your argument. you think the mark of an author's claim to worldwide fame and significance is that hollywood wants to make a cinema-friendly version? jesus christ get a grip.
and no, iranians make great movies by world-cinema standards. they win awards at cannes. there are no higher awards for film-as-art, 'cinema', the auteur/cahiers variety. they make serious movies that are acclaimed with the best of european art cinema. i'm not even going to counter your asinine african point. the africans are cultural savages because they haven't created an anime series you can whack off to yet. right. because the influence of anime on misfit maladjusted american teenagers really stakes japan's claim as art innovators.
